Lullaby for a Princess by WarpOut

Untitled

Honestly, this is perhaps the best animation this fandom has ever produced.

Two years in the making, this animation focuses on the story of the two princesses. We see the tale of Luna’s banishment from Celestia’s perspective, and it is undeniably beautiful. Words are almost not enough to praise the sheer artistry of this creation. The style is gorgeous, the animation is outstanding, there’s a perfect use of ambient lighting and the emotional depth is staggering. The overall production value rivals that of large-scale animation companies. Considering the majority of this was created by one unpaid individual as a labor of love, the results are absolutely mind-blowing.

Even from an editor’s perspective, I can respect the amount of hard work, dedication and effort that this project must have took. While it may currently be spreading around like wildfire, I believe WarpOut deserves every single ounce of praise he gets. If he doesn’t get any career opportunities or the chance to advance his profession due to this, the world would be suffering a great injustice. Truly awesome.

Photo Party by AgrolChannel

What’s one word to describe this next PMV?  Blissful.

That’s right ladies and colts, we have a very happy and heartwarming animation coming up from the one and only Agrol who should definitely be posting more often.  The best part about it is that there is a wonderful and relaxing story that compliments the animation style beautifully.

And what is that style you ask?  The first few seconds were in the typical fan-animation tweening process that tend to plague amateur animations.  However, we then move on to a series of pictures (not dissimilar to Fimflamfilosophy) strung together as a representation of Pinkie’s photo collection.  It’s nostalgic, funny, and it also doesn’t take itself too seriously, which seems to be a problem in more and more videos.

The story is pretty simple, but also fun.  Pinkie runs around town to invite the Mane 6 crew to her photo party and gives the invitations in creative ways.  Casually happy acoustic tunes flow right along with the actions and everything has the best possible prosody.

Find it below for a fun springtime treat!

Pompeii by TheClimbingBrony OldColt

king_sombra_by_baitoubaozou-d68a2c9

Hey guys, today we have a nice simple PMV by “TheClimbingBrony OldColt”. Although his name is quite a handful, this PMV is easy to understand.

So, I must start off by saying it’s nice to see a PMV that combines show footage with fan made projects. Been a while since we’ve had one of them. The editing style is nice and simple, which is good to see nowadays, nothing too flashy which makes it easy to watch. The clip choices match the lyrics, which is always helpful. There are some nice attempts at lipsync here too. And although not all of them are perfectly on time, it was definitely a good effort. The video seemed to follow a theme at the start of the video, but it was kinda jumbled about and lost later on. And although it seemed rather detached from the rest, the end gag was pretty funny and clever too. Even though this PMV doesn’t stand out as something spectacularly special, it sure is fun to watch.

Some would compare it to a smashed gingerbread house. It’s hard to make out the focus or form, but it still tastes great.

Pony Soda by DownburstProductions

Hello guys and gals! Today I bring you with a really cool PMV with a Shawn Wasabi song. If you know me, you know that I mostly like and watch PMVs with motion graphics and cool effects, but everyonce in a while I like to see some simple neat PMVs. This is one of them, and it’s great. With only using clips, no filters or effects, the editor here has arranged and synchronized each clip with the song. The silly sound effects in the music that Shawn Wasabi has created with his MIDI fighter, Downburst also added it’s own bits and clips of silly moments of the ponies which makes the video really fun to watch. Go watch the PMV down below!

Flutterbat Trailer by rspectcopyrightmyass

Many people were excited for this episode because of the vampire-pony thing.

I was excited for this episode because of the Fluttershy-pony thing.

Here we have a well constructed trailer that brings a certainly cinematic feel to the whole ordeal.  We haven’t seen a good movie trailer in quite a while on the pony front, but this video proves that the art is not dead and very much in good condition!

The PMV uses a combination of actual trailer clips with simple black and white text and reflective designs along with clips which are mostly from the Bats! episode.  The great part about this is that our editor uses just enough of the pony clips and the non-pony clips to create interest while not inching away from the MLP side.  Another plus is the appropriate and consistent character assignment and sticking to genre. (we even get a little thrill scare at the end, which is perfect for the mood!)

Check out the bats below, and remember to lock your doors at night, lest the adorable vampony attack!

Fair Play by HeavyWeaponsBaby

pmvtoday

Are you ready for some intense feels?

So here we have a really unique video based on Pinkie’s childhood emotions. It’s not often we get PMV’s that try to tell a custom narrative in their format. Usually, the presence of the song dictates everything about the video – but here HeavyWeaponsBaby has strived to tell a tale through visuals. And with the very limited footage of Pinkie’s childhood available, that really is impressive.

The story focuses on Pinkie dealing with Granny Pie’s death. As a child, her grandmother gave her a diary. Pinkie used it to draw pictures of her hopes and dreams, of making ponies smile. However, when Granny died she felt like giving up everything she had. She’d scribble over the pages and sink deeper into depression. When Maud attempted to comfort her she would get angry and refuse. Only through remembering the happy memories could she move forward and cherish her life.

How does a show footage PMV manage to do this? Visually, it overlays a lot of colour and bloom effects onto the clips to emphasize the atmosphere. Blue is often the cold, depressive colour and so the video uses a lot of overexposed tinting. Behind the effects, there’s quite a bit of custom editing in terms of masking and vectors. It’s done very convincingly, and the overlaid effects help to pull the scenes together.

What I like most about this video is the sheer creativity used to serve the story. Rather than being intimidated by the lack of available footage (especially when it comes to the specific scenes), the creator went ahead and did their best to visualize a narrative. The work shows and I have to commend it for that. Some of the effects don’t work as well as they could, but I still feel this is a breath of fresh air. Very well put together. Check it out below.

Faster by rainbowdashzx

Hey guys, sorry for the late post, I’ve been extremely busy all day long. I’ll keep this post short.

Today we have a new PMV by rainbowdashzx. I’m gonna be honest, I’m having issues making sense of what is going on, but maybe you, the viewer, can.

So my primary reason for confusion is that I simply can’t see what’s going on in the video. There’s too much overlay, and the opacity should have been lowered on it. Additionally, there’s really no reason for it to last the entire length of the video. There was a huge area that just didn’t even bother with clips, just text, which was half illegible because of the overlay. Hope I don’t sound too harsh here.

Lemon Tree by TheRayteR

dozing_through_the_breeze_by_kometiv-d7qnnxl

Interesting little PMV we’ve got here today. By “The RayteR”, who’s only been around for about a month and is already doing pretty well.

The song itself isn’t really the type of song you see very often in PMV’s, but this guy seems to have pulled it off. The bright colors match the cheery theme. There’s a good choice of clips, and the visuals match up well with the lyrics. One thing that stands out is the slick motion graphics. Interesting use of bright cheerful colors, which feels somewhat summery.

If I were to criticize this video, I could say that the lip sync was a little off in some scenes. The typography could use some work, especially in the first scenes where the text color makes it difficult to read. The color correction is a little inconsistent, and the glow is too strong, which washes out the original footage, but other than that, this is a pretty good video.

Overall I’d say it’s quite a pretty PMV. It’s enjoyable to watch and there isn’t a visual overload. So props to The RayteR, and I hope to see more content from him in the near future.

Stole The Show by rainbowdashzx

It’s hard not to steal the show when you’re the only one worth showing, darling.

Aside from Rarity’s fabulosity complex (a very serious condition), the element of generosity brings out some great modern style PMVs.  The great thing about this next one is that it presents a nice bite-size balance between brilliant design, editing, contrast and even includes a bit of a very simple story.  Simple is better than none though!

The grand focus of this video tends to fall on the design and look of the piece to be honest, which was absolutely wonderful.  Everything from the text styling to the picture elements and especially to the striped masks and great transitions fit well into the style of a fabulous and modern lament about having to go.  With a piece as short and design focused as this one, however, there is room to nitpick.  Thus I can tell you my one disagreement in here would be at 1:11 where we see a silhouette of diamond-butt. The problem is that her eyes can still be slightly seen.  She looks like that girl from Dark Meadow  just a little bit and it’s kinda creepy.  If this was a stylistic choice, I simply have a different opinion.  If it was an error, the editor is just starting to learn a new program version so it’s understandable.

Get some modern style below as your favorite white and purple pony steals the show!

Robot Love by Penny Thief

sweetie_bot_inquiry_mode_by_symbianl-d84imtp

Set phasers to post.

Hey all! Here we have the first PMV from a new editor on the scene. I actually ended up talking to Penny Thief while he was making this – turns out he felt inspired by the likes of my work. The best part about being a creator is knowing that you can inspire others to create too.

For a first PMV, I can’t complain. There’s a lot of interesting concepts, custom scenes and typography in use, as well as a bunch of the GreenscreenPonies masks that everyone seems to use. There’s definitely a stylistic approach of a black and white noir colour scheme. It’s nice to see a song of this genre done with MLP too.

The execution, admittedly, could be much better. But I’m sure that by making more PMV’s, the creator will improve and hone his skills. The video could be more smooth – the cuts feel too sharp and direct. Transitions would help a lot, as would the inclusion of more visual action on screen. The pacing could be improved as it currently drags a bit.

Despite the author commenting on how he doesn’t know what he’s doing (2:38), it’s fun observing his experimentation throughout the video. The fact that he’s actively trying out all these new things gives him a giant advantage moving forward. It was a great first attempt and I really enjoyed the lighthearted chilled out atmosphere of it. Check it out below!
