The Sun Is Rising by Abby S

Long time no post! But I have returned at just the right time to post a new video from one of my favorite (and criminally undersubbed) editors, Abby S. This video starts off pretty melancholy but overall is uplifting. Get ready for some feels.

True to her style, The Sun is Rising is sparse on the effects and shows her great sense of timing and scene selection. I would have really liked a story line if possible, but I still thing that even without one this a great video.  There were some transition I felt were questionable, but not to the point I feel they seriously detract in any way from the overall video

Leave Out All The Rest by metalsystem761

Alright, I was wrong.  And I’m sorry.

When first previewing this PMV, I immediately ran into one of the more risky elements of this fandom’s editing department: fan-made mixed with official content.  Then I noticed another rather traumatic indicator: the music video resemblance “Song, Artist, Record Label” text in the bottom left corner.  Another thing that had slightly bothered me was the inclusion of “w/Lyrics” in the title.

Now there’s nothing inherently wrong with these things, but after a couple of years of searching for videos, these are typical indicators that the PMV will not be all that good.  So I assumed this and put it down for a bit.  Then I gathered up the guts to watch the whole video, and it’s pretty dang awesome.  So don’t stop watching within the first ten seconds like I did, because you’ll miss some great lyric matching, story building, character exploring and generally good editing.  Check it out!

Love Today by Arthychaud

pinkpo

Alright, here’s a challenge for you. Start playing the video and try not to smile immediately.

Did you fail? I did.

Here we have another great PMV by Arthychaud, who much to my delight is still kicking around. This is generally just an all-around happy feel good PMV. Mika’s vocal range still manages to impress me years down the line but that’s beside the point. Arthy has done a fantastic job showcasing upbeat scenes through the show and solidly syncing them up. I love the use of text and really love the solid color changes. Super simple but it just works beautifully. The ending of the PMV has to be one my favorite parts – the montage of various characters being affectionate just warms my heart. Why do these ponies have to be so GOSH DANG CUTE?!

Technically speaking, while I think the use of Pinkie’s smile song serves it’s purpose, I felt it was a tad overused. The video sets itself up as a Mane 6 homage and it would’ve been nice to see more hugs and nuzzles from the other ponies. The lack of lipsync is fine by me, but I think when you take that from a video other elements should compensate. Some parts of the video really struck gold and others could use a bit more work on the pacing and cutting to reach their full potential. Regardless, still a really fun video that I thoroughly enjoyed watching.

Wish I Had an Angel by Dr_Stables

Sure, the song says “wish I had an angel”, but I bet Adagio really just wants a flat iron.

IGNORING THAT, we’ve got another effects-busting piece from the submissions here today.  It’s got a bunch of flashy lights and spinning things, so if you’re medically inclined to avoid those, please do so!

Again with Stables’ piece, the main complaint is the excessiveness of effects, although that’s turned into somewhat of their style.  Chromatic aberration plays a big part and is actually used in a different way than normal.  But my favorite part of this PMV is the new flavor of transitions that we get to see.  The effects are still a negative influence, but the thought and speed of those transitions brings it almost to an equilibrium.  So next time, we need not necessarily less effects, but calmer and more consistent ones.

Regardless, check it out below and explore the dazzling theme behind this edit!

Awake O Sleeper! by ObsessiveBookworm

Saddle up, partner. We’re going for a ride.

Although the PMV itself doesn’t seem to be related to the typical western theme, the song certainly gives those vibes. And now I’m seriously craving more PMV’s done to that genre. We need more badass Applejack in this community – but I digress.

For the most part, the video focuses on the Mane 6 and their overarching stories which works very well with the furious intensity of the song. ObsessiveBookworm has really nailed down the timing for this one. It’s some really solid editing, powerful in nature and certainly carrying dramatic weight behind it. One of the best things about simplistic PMV’s is that by stripping away the effects, you’re left with the base visuals. This can be great for storytelling, and the atmosphere is definitely one of the positives in this one. If I had to raise an objection, it would be that I don’t quite understand if there was a sense of a direction going on here. I think a more consistent focus on individual characters or stories could’ve helped. Like OB mentions in the description, it’s a very cool song and a PMV of it had to be made. Could it be done better? Maybe. Did I enjoy it? Hell yes. It was great!

Check out some crazy intensity below.

Wings by I Blazer I

rainbow_dash_by_celebi_yoshi-d53y2a4

Hi, we’re PMVToday and we’ll post anything we can find. All jokes aside, you can pack quite a lot in to just 30 seconds of PMV, and this video proves that.

So today’s video is by I Blazer I, known for making short but snappy motion graphics heavy PMV’s. And to be honest, although this looks great, I feel there’s a lot of recycled ideas here. As much as I’m against the idea that all motion graphics PMV’s are the same, some parts of this video make it hard argue against that point. For example at 00:4 he clearly took inspiration from Acleps’ Dive Game PMV, and that’s just a start. I’m not going to point out every single recycled idea, because it did obviously take a lot of time and effort to make.

I like what the creator has done here, and it’s enjoyable to watch. I do feel they have a lot of potential, they just need to bring something new to the table.

Fourth of July || Twixie by BaltoDork

No but seriously, I keep hearing fireworks and stuff going off around my neighborhood at 11PM and it’s been over a week since that holiday.  Y’all have no chill.

Well, at least we get fabulous PMVs like this one as a result!  That’s right, it’s another Fall Out Boy song, but it’s got excellent visuals from an editor who we don’t see much of.  There isn’t too much ingenuity, but everything works together like a true piece of art and it keeps a focus through the lyrics.

To start with the effects, they were really the glue that held the piece together.  Things got a little shaky with the introduction of still images (often the sign of a subpar edit) but the colored light leaks and transitions kept everything running smoothly.  The shipping story here isn’t too differential from the lyrics, but it does a nice job with the limited clip selection and really brings everything back together with a greater focus.

Loyalty by Epsi1

widedash

As we lurch into another hiatus, Bronycon looms closer and us PMV judges are fighting fiercely over the contest results. Today, I’d like to take a breather and talk about a regular PMV from Epsi1. I’ve previously been acquainted with Epsi through my livestreams, so it’s nice to see him creating his own content.
So here we have an unfinished yet interesting video set to music from Phony. His upbeat style is one I’ve craved from PMV’s for a while, so it’s nice to see a video utilizing this. There’s a lot of different concepts briefly dipped into through the video, but overall it feels slightly bare. For feedback, I would suggest to have more actual editing throughout. While it’s good to let clips “breathe” with timing, the pacing of the music suggests that there could be more going on. With the suggested opening and song theme, it would’ve been nice to see a consistent focus on Dash too. That being said, the effects aren’t too bad and it feels like Epsi may currently be in the experimentation phase with AE. It’s good to see attempts being made rather than nothing at all. Some nice typography motion in the later half.

Inside Out (Parody Trailer) by Bridleway462GHA

the_voices_in_our_heads_by_vcm1824-d8y3549

We don’t usually post trailer parodies on PMV Today, so lets change things up a little this time around. Since both trailer parodies and PMV’s require similar editing techniques, this review shouldn’t feel too irregular.

The creator chose fitting clips, which is always essential. Although the lipsync wasn’t perfect at some points, a good attempt was made. I feel like they chose good characters to represent each emotion, definitely one of the strongest points for this video. The jokes were funny, and the good choice of footage reinforced this fact with visual humor.

The only thing that bugged me about this video is that I found it hard to distinguish between what was going on in the real world, and what was going on inside their heads. They could’ve made the transition between the two settings a little clearer.

All in all this was a fun, simple and well executed trailer parody.
