Inactivity

Hey guys. DeLoop here.

As you’ve probably noticed, the site has turned into a bit of a ghost town. This is entirely my fault and I take the blame for the lack of posting and activity overall.

I simply haven’t had the motivation to run a site like this. It was already a monumental task, but when pretty much all of the previous staff disappeared without much of a trace, I just wanted to make sure the legacy was continued. The thing is, it’s hard to make this site a priority when I’m utterly swamped with my own life. I’m struggling as it is to keep up with University and I simply can’t afford the time to run an entire website. I can hardly afford the time to edit my own videos.

I’ve tried contacting Chrono and gaining access to the Twitter and Facebook in the hopes that social media would aid us, but so far my efforts have been fruitless. I attempted to bring staff on board, but even their motivation started to sway when they saw the lack of results. We could put a ton of effort into showcasing and analysing PMV’s, but we’d get about 10 views and if we’re extremely lucky, one comment. I don’t feel it’s worth it. I feel that 2013 was this site’s golden era, but ultimately I don’t think the support from the community is there anymore. Don’t get me wrong, PMV’s are making great progress – with all these new collab projects and rising editors, it’s really nice to see. But personally, I have too much on my plate and my motivation has really died down.

So, I don’t know what’ll happen. There’ll probably still be PMV contests and stuff in the future but right now it seems everything’s in limbo. I’m sorry I couldn’t keep up with it all. I’m not a website designer, reviewer or an author. I’m an editor and I need to focus on that.

The CMC Never Stopped Believin’ by Eldonde

we_got_our_cutie_marks__by_dennybutt-d9cm4zt

I can’t be the only one who got insane chills seeing these three achieve their goals. And what better way to celebrate than with a montage set to a Journey classic?

Here we have a pretty great PMV from Eldonde that quite frankly needed to happen. It’s the typical clip-show of the CMC that you’d expect but there’s quite a bit of thought behind it. It remains faithful to the lyrics, shows off some crucial scenes of the three and has some nice sync. I will say it’s a tad slower paced than I’d expect, which works well for the intro but I think it’d be nice to get more cuts in there for the sake of impact. Still, the decision to leave shots “breathe” is always refreshing. It feels natural rather than overdone. And besides, the sheer meaning and emotion behind this redeems it. Great job!

The CMC never stopped believing. And so they achieved their dreams. <3

MLP Indonesian Intro by Animerge

mlpwhole

I got stuck in a time travelling washing machine. Probably not a good enough excuse, but alas I make my glorious return with a flash bang and whallop. Hello! Hi. Yes. Okay. Let me hang my coat up and take my shoes off.

I’ll be honest with you, my motivation for this site kinda dwindles when there’s a bunch of life stuff that gets in the way. But like a fish to water, you guys are my addiction that I always come crawling back to. So here we have a really underappreciated yet neat fanmade intro for the show! Reminiscent of many Japanese animoo openings (not that I’m an expert), the video has a great sense of presentation and style. There’s some nice masking, a great showcase of the episodes and some visuals that really shine. The ending kinda reminded me of Feedsy’s work yet added a breath of fresh air to it, a twist to the concept of 3D colored lights twirling around one another. Always nice to see this type of content – it really gives the editor a chance to impress.

All in all, this was a delight to watch. 5 years of pony, 5 years of remarkable talent. I want this site to really put a spotlight on those who deserve it, and it’s really hard to think that this guy only has 146 views and 2 subscribers to his name. I’m not sure this site will send him spiraling into horse fame, but I hope it does help at least a bit. Give him some love!

Heart by omgilikeapples

Woo, paper ponies!

Looks like we’re kickstarting another week, huh? Unfortunately, University has just started for me so I’ll likely be wrapped up with that for a bit. Education: Just say no.

Anywho, I found a pleasant surprise in my subscription box on Saturday. The return of omgilikeapples! I remember him fondly from his 2012 PMV – “Dear Princess Celestia…” The unique stop-motion paper style made that PMV stand out from a lot of others back then. It’s really nice to see a return to form utilizing that effect again in 2015 with a Porter Robinson song.

The video seems to be focused on the Season 2 finale, a recreation of the events throughout the two parter. It’s very neat to see it all brought together in this musical homage with some custom scenes to boot. For criticism, I’m left with wanting a bit more than just a recap of the episode in a different style. It’d be really cool to have more custom elements throughout! Still, what we get is great. The stop-motion style of editing is one that I’d love to see more of in PMV’s. Just imagine that done with custom art too… Oh wait, TheeLinker jumped on that train with La Da Dee…

I personally think it’d be awesome to see omgilikeapples make more stuff, so please go give them your support!

100% + 20% by UnmuteChannel

Hey everyone! I often find myself drawn to story over visuals. That’s not to say I don’t appreciate motion graphics, it’s more that I find a stronger emotional connection in a narrative. That being said, this mini PMV by Unmute Channel has some awesome visual work going on. There’s a lot of variety and everything is executed incredibly smoothly. It’s short, punchy and stylistic. I’m loving the use of coloured shapes and backgrounds. It’s simple in concept but works well. I’m also a huge sucker for SimGretina music.

It’s always a breath of fresh air to see a new editor on the scene, and it seems Unmute already has a strong grasp of how to edit effectively. One minor point of improvement I’d bring up is the white stroke and motion blur combination. AE tends to be awkward and puts a thicker line around the blur, causing a weird blending effect. Having experienced this issue myself, I’d suggest looking into pre-comps and fixing it that way. Anywho, I’d definitely say keep an eye out on Unmute. I think if he keeps making these, he’s gonna make it big in the fandom. Great job!

Cupcakes by Scott Rogers

It’s rare to see someone make a video to their own song. It’s very rare for the result to be really good.

So here we have a blend of typography and motion graphics set to a remix of the classic Season 1 song. I’ll be honest – upon checking this out in the submissions I was so happy to see something utilizing typography and rocking it. In PMV’s nowadays, words are generally not the main visual focus. To see a scene set-up with the lyrics in mind is refreshing. We need more typographies in this fandom.

I love how whimsical, bright and vivid the video is. It’s a lot of fun to see creativity flowing like this, and the colourful graphics really fit with the show style. The animation is pretty smooth and the timing is spot on. Yeah, it’s a bit repetitive but that’s to be expected when making a remix of a 24 second song. I appreciate the subtle things added throughout to keep things fresh, like the variations on the song sheets. There’s a few movements which could be refined but overall Scott did a fantastic job for his first PMV. Huge props to him and I’d really love to see more content in this style.

Motions (PMV Animation Teaser) by Drakinite

386815

Ah Monday, we meet again. Overall, it’s been quite a good week for us. Our new writers have done a great job and it’s awesome to see the site in action again. So with that in mind, I’d like to grab the spotlight and shine it in our direction. Specifically at the blue dragon sitting over there.

A lot of us who write for PMV Today are content creators ourselves and I feel this allows for a variety of different opinions and viewpoints. Case in point: Drakinite. He’s a talented up-and-coming animator who’s working on a full length custom animated PMV. Self promotion aside, he released a teaser for the project a few weeks ago and it’s pretty cool.

With the overwhelming success of “Strangers“, there’s no doubting that animated PMV’s can be executed very well. “Motions” here seems to feature a new OC character singing about her woes. What woes exactly? I’m… not sure. But hey, Soarin’ shows up for a few seconds. I’m gonna take a shot in the dark and say Miss Pink over here wants to be in a relationship with Soarin, but his heart lies with Spitfire. I think. Maybe. Possibly.

Alright – truth be told I’m not entirely sure what’s going on. It’s hard to tell from one teaser. All I know is that the animation shown is promising. Solid lip-sync and it’ll certainly be interesting to see what story emerges with these new characters. I do hope that we get enough context to be able to sympathize and relate with them. Often it’s difficult to create that connection with the audience, especially in a short music video. Either way, I wish him the best of luck with the creation. Hope it turns out well.

Check out the teaser below, and be sure to subscribe and pester Drakinite for the eventual release!

Chasing The Sun! by GuncaPMV

ChasingSun

Looks like Gunca’s back! I didn’t realize how much I missed his work after EquestriaCollabs went off the radar.

Here’s a lovely carefree and chilled out mini-PMV with gorgeous visuals to boot. Despite the video barely scraping a minute in length, there’s quite a lot going on with motion graphics. Gunca always seems to find a way to make lighting look absolutely stunning, and it physically hurts me to think what his After Effects projects look like (That being said, have you SEEN Acleps edit?). The atmosphere created here is lighthearted, bubbly and just genuinely heartwarming.

It feels like the visuals take main stage here. Rather than focus on story, Gunca pursues the visual form and transforms it into pure art. It’s almost like the flow of the video carries you along with it. As if watching a fireworks display, the dazzling lights capture your eyesight and you keep watching in awe. It’s something I couldn’t hope to replicate yet have a lot of respect for. Also great news to hear that his talents have brought him work at a huge local company. To see editors springboard from the community into a successful career is nothing short of inspiring and I wish him the best of luck.

(Rainbow) Rock of Ages by Bronies & Mash

rainbow_dash_with_guitar_by_creatorofpony-d86xliq

Hey Equestria, are you ready to ROCK?!

You better be because we’ve got an awesome comeback PMV from Bronies & Mash! Older readers may remember him as “The Invincible”, and he did a great job helping out with the site back in ye olden days.

So today we have a Rainbow Rocks centric PMV set to a pretty damn cool mashup of rock ballads. A common problem during making PMV’s is that sometimes it can be hard to match the atmosphere and vibe of the chosen song. However, Rainbow Rocks being based on music only helps to strengthen how well the video and audio match up.

What we end up with is a really fun and almost seamless tribute to rock music. It’s one of the best uses of EQG footage I’ve seen in a PMV yet. There’s no crazy effects but the footage stands up well enough to deserve merit. Great editing, solid lipsync, and a newfound peak for EQG music videos. I honestly couldn’t think of a better way to breathe new life into the site. I also can’t count how many times I’ve replayed the section at 1:47. The whole thing deserves praise for it’s awesome execution. I really enjoyed it. Can’t wait to see if Invincible has more tricks up his sleeve.

Unleash your inner rockstar below!
