It’s Been So Long by TackiestFire

Happiest of Fridays to you! It has been a while since I (TheDanielsaur) have posted anything, and for that I apologize. Life happens, you know? But for now, it looks like I am migrating from Wednesdayland and taking up residence in Fridayville for the foreseeable future. It’s nice here.

Anyhoo, today’s PMV comes to us from a most un-chic flame by the name of TackiestFire. There’s something oddly compelling about this PMV that I can’t quite put my hoof on. It’s a bit emo, overall, but the driving beat combined with some excellent footage choices make for an entertaining watch, even if me isn’t usually my forte. I like the sense of narrative that this one has, even if there might be just one too many clips of Twilight on the verge of tears for my liking. I get what the author was doing, however, and I appreciate it. The flip-flops between grayscale and color felt a bit arbitrary, but when all is said and done, I quite enjoyed this PMV for its solid editing, engaging story and (as previously stated) overall compelling nature.

Mystical and awesome Zecora intro? Check! Epic symphonic metal? Check! Delicious clips of some of the best action scenes of the show? Check! Triple check checklist to make sure we didn’t miss anything when we double checked the checklist? Uh… check!

There isn’t much to not like about today’s PMV (yes, I know that was a double negative). It’s fast-paced and full of energetic action scenes, the song is a lot of fun (who doesn’t love Within Temptation?), and there are some cool effects sprinkled here and there without being overdone or feeling overproduced.  Some of the lip-syncing felt like it needed some extra polish, but I might be bothered by out-of-sync lips more than is good for me. But as Larry the Cucumber so wisely said, “I love my lips.”

Human by Dr_Stables

Get ready for some humanoid equines coming your way, Wednesdaylings! Today, the site should be called EGMV Today, because… well, because… oh, never mind.

Today’s video sports an extraordinarily fitting song. Apart from the obvious, the style and pace of the song also fits very well and really captures the youthful energy of Equestria Girls. There are quite a few effects used in this video, but I don’t think they were overdone to the point of gaudiness. Rather, they are used tastefully for the most part, and create some fun transitions and syncopations with the beats of the track. There is a fair amount of lip-syncing, too, and it’s done very well! My only real gripe was that the ending is rather abrupt, just fading out instead of allowing the song to end, and the overall experience feels too short and leaves the viewer wanting. Still, it’s definitely enjoyable and more than worth a watch, so check it out below!

Pompeii by Red Card

There are no less than about ten different PMVs for this song, which isn’t surprising, given the song’s popularity, but this one certainly stands out above most, if not all of the rest. The editing is simple and clean, but very tight, with a wonderful grasp of rhythm, flow, and scene selection. I have a soft spot for PMVs like that, and this one really nailed the formula. The song, while a bit overplayed perhaps, is a great listen, of course, and really infuses the footage with a wonderful sense of energy and general feel-goodery.

Check it out below! (P.S. 1:38 in the video is really where the magic happens. I got chills.)

Pinkie Pie’s Pokerap by DagaYemar

my_little_pokemon_trainer_by_kilala97-d7sg6xm

The author of today’s video, DagaYemar, has already impressed me countless times with his ability to graft ponies into (primarily Disney) songs while maintaining impeccable characterization and lip-syncing.

And then there was this. This video takes the ponification game and brings it to a whole new level. Perhaps I’m waxing hyperbolic here, but this is probably the most entertaining PMV I’ve watched in a good three months at least, and here’s why:

The name of every single Pokemon from the original games is included in this rap, and the author managed to find a character, creature, item, or moment to represent every single one of them. That’s right. Each and every one of the original 151 Pokemon has been ponified in some form or fashion here, and the match-ups are absolutely brilliant. They fly at you so fast and thick that you often don’t even have time to register the brilliance of, say, casting Snips and Snails (stuck together with gum) as Slowbro. This PMV begs repeat watches just to try to figure out and appreciate all of the match-ups. I’m blown away by the amount of time and thought that must have gone into combing every season and episode of the show to find the perfect one-second clip to go with each Pokemon.

The interplay between Pinkie Pie and Iron Will as the rappers is also really well done. The scenes chosen for their parts fit perfectly and were usually hilarious. I really appreciate all of DagaYemar’s work, but this might just be the pinnacle of his portfolio. Check it out below!

Open Your Eyes (Spectra Remix) by VictiniStar101

mlp_twilight_sparkle__uber_magic_mode_by_mewtwo_ex-d5inwcc

As much as I love it when PMVs use songs that don’t have anything to do with ponies and that creatively interpret said songs’ lyrics to make them fit with the show, I also just love it when these original songs by artists like the Aviators are used. Since the songs were written about the show, they fit PMVs like gloves. Velvety, velvety gloves…

Today’s PMV does just that (uses an original song, I mean), and does very well with it. The footage selections are tasteful and varied, spanning all four seasons of the show, and the editing, while simple, is never unpleasant or jarring. I like the simple and clean style, myself, and I think it works well here, especially considering the 5-minute length. It’s easy to get bored in longer PMVs, but this one held my attention, and I can tell that the author put a lot of toil into it.

Hooked on a Feeling by Unr3al Gamer

Screen Shot 2014-08-20 at 11.29.56 AM

Today’s PMV is a lot of fun, from beginning to end. The silly-but-catchy chanting that starts it off really sets the tone for the fun times and good feels to come. I would call this a simple PMV, although there are some tastefully-used filters and a few light effects and transitions at play. While the lip-sync could have been better, the scene choices matched up really well with the feeling of each and every moment of the song. I found myself smiling a lot while watching this one, and that’s always a good sign for a successful PMV, in my book. I’m definitely hooked on the feeling that this video creates.

Wake Up Littlepip by PatrioticMoose

Right off the bat, I have to go ahead and admit, somewhat shamefully, that I have never watched any of the Fallout Equestria material.  After seeing this PMV, however, I can definitely say that I want to! This video is definitely epic, a word that is typically used too loosely, but here fits. The music is perfect for the stunning visuals of the SFM scenes. The editing together of the various source of Fallout Equestria footage is well done, but I did find it somewhat jarring to switch from SFM footage to a standard MLP style and back. I can jive with SFM when it’s on its own, but I’m not sure I care for it being married to the normal flash animation.

Small gripes aside, this is a cool and dramatic video with some great music and visuals, so check it out below!

This Is It by SuperEffectiveBros

rainbow_dash___dash_with_it_by_mysteriouskaos-d5cu0zq

Greetings, Wednesdaylians. For your viewing pleasure today,  I’d like to bring a scrumptious morsel to your plates. The actual length of this video (minus credits) clocks in at only about 50 seconds, but boy, does every second count. This video is absolutely dripping with juicy effects, transitions, typography, you name it. I can’t even begin to describe to you how many cool things are squished into this minute-long adventure, but suffice it to say: there are a lot of cool things (including Rainbow Dash, who is indeed a cool thing).

Some people complain about how short dubstep PMVs only riff off of cutie mark vectors and do little else, but I think that this one used plenty of footage and mixed it up nicely with some of that custom cutie mark stuff. I think the author struck a perfect chord between the two, and I wish more of these minute-long dubstep PMVs would take notes and follow suit.

Unicorn Zombie Apocalypse by MylittleBronieDE

my_little_zombie_apocalypse_team_by_agentbrony-d4pc4it

For a song with only three words, this is quite an engaging PMV. Pulling off long instrumental sections is always tough, but this video uses effects well to really showcase the Season 2 finale and give it an even more actiony feel than it already had (and that’s saying something). The greenish filter definitely adds to the zombie theme, and the punchy kicks of the beat really come through strong with the added effects. This is a fast-paced, energetic anthem that shows off some of the best moments from the Season 2 finale, with an undead spin.
