Guide You Home by Abby S

Hello again. Jack here, back with another PMV that was submitted to this year’s BronyCon PMV Contest. Not only did this PMV take first place in the Dramatic category, but it was made by one of our very own authors on the site, Abby S!

When I saw this PMV for the first time, I knew it was going to place very well in the contest. The whole PMV was built to be dramatic from start to finish, with the combination of show clips, filters, transitions, and typography set to the pulsating music. The show clips match the lyrics incredibly well, and I thought the filters used added to the dramatic atmosphere superbly. Add the transitions and typography effects into the mix, and you have a very clean, well-made traditional PMV that is definitely worthy of its first place finish.

Check out the PMV for Guide You Home below, and make sure to check out Abby’s channel for more great PMV’s like this one!

Surface by Dark Sonata

Anyone who’s seen Antony C and Tommy Oliver’s review of A Canterlot Wedding probably remembers how the video ended – them claiming that Princess Luna was masquerading as Queen Chrysalis to test herself against modern Equestrian security.

This video delves into that theory, telling the story of that alternate universe where Luna is still the bad guy. And man, is it cool. Though I’m usually not big on motion graphics, I love the way Sonata uses them here. They feel slick, matching the tone of the song, yet never distract from the overall story. They are also integrated with clips from the show very well. Really, this is just a quality PMV, which you all need to watch. And subscribe to the editor, because they only have ten subscribers, which is just shocking to me. Check it out down below.

Quest (This Can’t Be All) DXIndustriesInc

spike___footprint_by_mysticalpha-d4iqali

Continuing with our influx of PMV contest videos, we have the “Best In Show”. Edited by DXIndustries, to the song “Quest (This Can’t Be All)” by BlackGryph0n and Baasik.

So what exactly is it that makes this video so good. Well the fact that it’s a Spike PMV makes it worthy of praise. Spike PMV’s are few and far between since there is little usable footage to work with. Right off the bat you get the chills, with super sharp editing of show footage to the music. The use of black and white also adds an interesting aesthetic, that stops the simple cuts from getting old.

There is a fantastic use of 3D, that makes the setting feel huge, and really makes us understand how small and insignificant Spike feels. After some more simple but effective editing, we have some slick typography. Which surprisingly enough isn’t overbearing. It’s difficult to get that good mix of typography and original footage, but DX has hit the sweet spot here by incorporating the text in to the landscape.

Honestly, I can’t find anything wrong with this PMV. It’s just a fantastic show of great talent, and there’s no surprise it won. No matter how many times I watch it, I’m always left with a huge smile on my face at the end. Props to DXIndustries, I’m sure we all hope to see more great content like this from him in the future.

I’ve Been Secretly Falling Apart by Dark Sonata

Dark ponies!  Sad ponies!  Dark Sad!  Ponies ponies!

Now here me out before you go clicking on that play button down there, some impressions of this video will make you cringe a bit, but it is so worth watching anyway.  This, I honestly believe, is the only PMV I’ve seen to make the best use of the inverted colors filter.  Other parts, such as the vectors at around 2:00, might seem way to slow and predictable, but there is an art to it all if you look past certain things.

This one has both a mood and a focus, which is about a very sad Twilight starting to degrade and fall apart.  The one scene that comes to mind?  Yes, Twi being discorded.  However there is a good bit of ingenuity in the scene selection where we don’t see the overly typical finale scenes, and I can appreciate that.  HOWEVER, the most important part of this whole entire video is that the editor had fun making it!

So for that reason, check it out with an open mind and I think you’ll find that it’s just fine.

Leave Out All The Rest by metalsystem761

Alright, I was wrong.  And I’m sorry.

When first previewing this PMV, I immediately ran into one of the more risky elements of this fandom’s editing department: fan-made mixed with official content.  Then I noticed another rather traumatic indicator: the music video resemblance “Song, Artist, Record Label” text in the bottom left corner.  Another thing that had slightly bothered me was the inclusion of “w/Lyrics” in the title.

Now there’s nothing inherently wrong with these things, but after a couple of years of searching for videos, these are typical indicators that the PMV will not be all that good.  So I assumed this and put it down for a bit.  Then I gathered up the guts to watch the whole video, and it’s pretty dang awesome.  So don’t stop watching within the first ten seconds like I did, because you’ll miss some great lyric matching, story building, character exploring and generally good editing.  Check it out!

Wish I Had an Angel by Dr_Stables

Sure, the song says “wish I had an angel”, but I bet Adagio really just wants a flat iron.

IGNORING THAT, we’ve got another effects-busting piece from the submissions here today.  It’s got a bunch of flashy lights and spinning things, so if you’re medically inclined to avoid those, please do so!

Again with Stables’ piece, the main complaint is the excessiveness of effects, although that’s turned into somewhat of their style.  Chromatic aberration plays a big part and is actually used in a different way than normal.  But my favorite part of this PMV is the new flavor of transitions that we get to see.  The effects are still a negative influence, but the thought and speed of those transitions brings it almost to an equilibrium.  So next time, we need not necessarily less effects, but calmer and more consistent ones.

Regardless, check it out below and explore the dazzling theme behind this edit!

Awake O Sleeper! by ObsessiveBookworm

applejack_in_the_west_by_alkaa_wolf-d7r5pmx

Saddle up, partner. We’re going for a ride.

Although the PMV itself doesn’t seem to be related to the typical western theme, the song certainly gives those vibes. And now I’m seriously craving more PMV’s done to that genre. We need more badass Applejack in this community – but I digress.

For the most part, the video focuses on the Mane 6 and their overarching stories which works very well with the furious intensity of the song. ObsessiveBookworm has really nailed down the timing for this one. It’s some really solid editing, powerful in nature and certainly carrying dramatic weight behind it. One of the best things about simplistic PMV’s is that by stripping away the effects, you’re left with the base visuals. This can be great for storytelling, and the atmosphere is definitely one of the positives in this one. If I had to raise an objection, it would be that I don’t quite understand if there was a sense of a direction going on here. I think a more consistent focus on individual characters or stories could’ve helped. Like OB mentions in the description, it’s a very cool song and a PMV of it had to be made. Could it be done better? Maybe. Did I enjoy it? Hell yes. It was great!

Check out some crazy intensity below.

Fourth of July || Twixie by BaltoDork

No but seriously, I keep hearing fireworks and stuff going off around my neighborhood at 11PM and it’s been over a week since that holiday.  Y’all have no chill.

Well, at least we get fabulous PMVs like this one as a result!  That’s right, it’s another Fall Out Boy song, but it’s got excellent visuals from an editor who we don’t see much of.  There isn’t too much ingenuity, but everything works together like a true piece of art and it keeps a focus through the lyrics.

To start with the effects, they were really the glue that held the piece together.  Things got a little shaky with the introduction of still images (often the sign of a subpar edit) but the colored light leaks and transitions kept everything running smoothly.  The shipping story here isn’t too differential from the lyrics, but it does a nice job with the limited clip selection and really brings everything back together with a greater focus.

Darkest Part by WICKED is good

Twilight Sparkle represents friendship and all that but I bet she’d be an even better princess of the dark arts.  #JustSayin

As for today we have a rare gem from the long pages of YouTube search results that typically yield subpar videos.  This next one is somewhat heavy on effects and looks pretty dark, but at the same time it uses all of those effects rather properly and assigns those emotions in perfect accordance to the song.

Not only do we get some kick-flank distortion and typography, but the main focus of these effects is the awesome chromakeying that fills the transitions and speeds up the whole thing.  It makes the video seem like a thrill ride rather than a presentation, and it just works so well where implemented.  The complaints I had with this were the Hub logos and the fact that pastel horses still look a bit funny trying to scream.  But otherwise, my compliments to the editor and y’all should definitely give it a view or two below!

Critical Acclaim by rainbowdashzx

Equestria.  You will never find a more wretched hive of ponies and villainy…

Oh, and metal!

This next PMV by rainbowdashzx is OVER 5 MINUTES LONG and features a lot of angry horses screaming along to the sound of A7X.  The effects and theatrical style of everything make it seem like a real music video (minus the instruments) and the sound effects at the beginning do a great job of filling in empty space.  With the color correction and flashing lights, things were kept at pace with the song, which is always something hard to do.

The video is sensually beautiful.  Fantastic lip sync and nice atmosphere abounded and made all of the scenes work with the music.  The problem is, they didn’t work with themselves.  I have no clue what this video is about.  It seems to me like pure matching with the music and perhaps a general focus on evil versus good.  I invite you to check it out below and tell us what you think the focus is, but either way it’s a good visual experience if you aren’t afraid of flashing lights.
