Destiny | daspacepony (PMV Contest Best In Show)

It’s been a while.

Hi everyone, TheLightLeavesThee here, and I have been bestowed the honor of writing about the Best In Show winner of the recent BronyCon PMV contest.

(and by bestowed, I meant I saw the list of videos and exclaimed “MINEMINEMINE I WILL WRITE ABOUT THI-” *cough*)

So, this video here is called Destiny, and it’s by the amazingly talented and super underappreciated “Daspacepony.”
And let me tell you. This video didn’t really help my Post Con Depression after BronyCon was over.

Destiny is the kind of video you don’t realize how truly amazing it is until multiple viewings, but holy hell, this video gets to me. Every time I watch it I feel something. I don’t get that too often from the PMV Community anymore. I’m glad to see some people still pride themselves in making me feel like crying into my popcorn (you jerks.)

So from a technical standpoint, it’s solid, good cuts and editing throughout with little details here and there to keep things fresh. Excellent pacing throughout as well, using just the right moments from the show at just the right time, with nothing ever quite feeling like “filler.” I like the bits of motion graphics at the end, incredibly smooth and well done, not to mention a way to pad out the ending with emotional impact that again, does not feel like filler.

I want more videos like this from our community, guys, videos with meaning, passion and heart put into them. I haven’t felt so strongly in love with a PMV like this since “The Stars Will Aid In Her Escape.”
It’s THAT good guys. Watch it if you haven’t already.

Papercut (Collab) by Dazzl and Kooper

Image1

Hey guys, chocalicorn here, and today I’m back with a lovely PMV collab by Dazzl and Kooper called Papercut.

This video focuses a lot on Twilight Sparkle and the rest of the Mane 6, and their struggles with friendship as a group.  The video is very story-driven, but it also has a lot of attractive effects, which is something I’d really like to see more of.  This video earned a well-deserved spot on the Top Ten Pony Videos of April 2016.

That being said, PMVers often feel the need to visualize every single word when making typography.  This might just be personal preference, but I don’t think you need to make typography of “ahh.”  Again, I’m nitpicking.  This video is really cool.

Twin Skeletons (Hotel in NYC) by Dr_Stables

Hey, everyone! It’s been a few weeks… Where has time gone… Dr_Stables released a new PMV about a month ago, to the song Twin Skeleton’s by Fall Out Boy. His choice of show clips and use of graphics / transitions really fit to the mood of the song. It mostly focused on both dark / grim scenes, and Manehattan. (Twin Skeletons / Hotel in NYC, who would have guessed?) Having been recently introduced to typography and graphics, I now have a better eye for this kind of stuff – and I can tell Dr_Stables is getting good. We actually got to participate in an amazing PMV collab recently! Wonder what PMV? I’ll write about it in a few hours, so keep your eyes open. But first, watch this Twin Skeletons PMV!  It’s right down there. Come on, you know you want to watch it. You are just one click away from paradise. What are you doing reading this post still? There is absolutely no information or entertainment to be gained from these words. It will take away time from your Twin Skeletons! :(

The CMC Never Stopped Believin’ by Eldonde

we_got_our_cutie_marks__by_dennybutt-d9cm4zt

I can’t be the only one who got insane chills seeing these three achieve their goals. And what better way to celebrate than with a montage set to a Journey classic?

Here we have a pretty great PMV from Eldonde that quite frankly needed to happen. It’s the typical clip-show of the CMC that you’d expect but there’s quite a bit of thought behind it. It remains faithful to the lyrics, shows off some crucial scenes of the three and has some nice sync. I will say it’s a tad slower paced than I’d expect, which works well for the intro but I think it’d be nice to get more cuts in there for the sake of impact. Still, the decision to leave shots “breathe” is always refreshing. It feels natural rather than overdone. And besides, the sheer meaning and emotion behind this redeems it. Great job!

The CMC never stopped believing. And so they achieved their dreams. <3

The Pass by Drummershy

Hey guys! Abby here, and I have been sick all week, so sorry if this post is a little lackluster. But don’t blame this PMV, which is pretty great.

It’s Rainbow Dash-centric, which I know this fandom loves. Rather than focusing on surface level things like her attitude or speed, though, this video goes more into the emotional, vulnerable aspects of her personality, which I absolutely love. The editing matches the smooth tones of the song, flowing together to let the emotion shine through, rather than focusing on flashy effects. The typography also matches this cool tone. It’s just a well put-together video.

The one thing I am not wild about is that there are a couple of instrumental sections of the song where there were just still images the entire time. I dunno, maybe some show clips or just more images would have helped. Or maybe it’s just a me problem. Either way, it doesn’t stop me from loving this video. Go check it out down below.

Invisible Sun by Drummershy

Today I bring you a PMV from up-and-coming video editor, Drummershy, staring everyone’s favorite Princess Horse (unless you prefer Luna, Twilight, or Cadence), but if you love Celestia, this is the PMV for you!

This video has a pretty cool concept – the majority of video is inside Celestia’s cutie mark, with some cool, if simple, motion graphics. And as always, Drummershy displays some excellent scene selection. The song choice makes a lot of sense for a Princess Celestia video, and the whole thing flows together well. It is the kind of video that just leaves you feeling good.

My one major complaint would be the drumbeats in the beginning. Though I get the concept of the yellow circle beating in time with the drums, I feel like it could have been executed better. Perhaps take up more of the screen, instead of being off to the side? Regardless of that, this is a great PMV, and if you haven’t seen it yet, you definitely should. Drummershy always does well, and this is no exception.

Rainbow Dash’s Rousing Song of Heroism by DagaYemar

power_ponies___zapp_by_sakurawolfer-d6zq3ot

Hello readers of PMVToday, NameGoes here with another PMV from DagaYamar.

As with the other PMV of his we showcased here, it’s a simple PMV to suit the relatively simple music. The simple editing style also fits the song as it heralds back to the classic PMV’s with the song, and you don’t need overly complicated visuals to accompany a song like this. It features Rainbow Dash and Spike mostly, but uses other characters where they fit in the song.

With a song like this, it makes you get scenes from many different things, as it talks about different powers and such, so they did a really good job in finding appropriate scenes for each lyric, which once again shows knowledge about the show. The lip sync is also well done, a necessity in a PMV like this, and I definitely appreciate the work that had to be put into it. The mood was also very, jolly you could say, throughout, and he did a good job of keeping that mood and using it well.

All in all, here we have a classic PMV that reminds us of those good old times of simple editing and simple visuals, and simple is nice. Go check it out below!

Motions (PMV Animation Teaser) by Drakinite

386815

Ah Monday, we meet again. Overall, it’s been quite a good week for us. Our new writers have done a great job and it’s awesome to see the site in action again. So with that in mind, I’d like to grab the spotlight and shine it in our direction. Specifically at the blue dragon sitting over there.

A lot of us who write for PMV Today are content creators ourselves and I feel this allows for a variety of different opinions and viewpoints. Case in point: Drakinite. He’s a talented up-and-coming animator who’s working on a full length custom animated PMV. Self promotion aside, he released a teaser for the project a few weeks ago and it’s pretty cool.

With the overwhelming success of “Strangers“, there’s no doubting that animated PMV’s can be executed very well. “Motions” here seems to feature a new OC character singing about her woes. What woes exactly? I’m… not sure. But hey, Soarin’ shows up for a few seconds. I’m gonna take a shot in the dark and say Miss Pink over here wants to be in a relationship with Soarin, but his heart lies with Spitfire. I think. Maybe. Possibly.

Alright – truth be told I’m not entirely sure what’s going on. It’s hard to tell from one teaser. All I know is that the animation shown is promising. Solid lip-sync and it’ll certainly be interesting to see what story emerges with these new characters. I do hope that we get enough context to be able to sympathize and relate with them. Often it’s difficult to create that connection with the audience, especially in a short music video. Either way, I wish him the best of luck with the creation. Hope it turns out well.

Check out the teaser below, and be sure to subscribe and pester Drakinite for the eventual release!

Glow by daspacepony

friendship_is_hexagons_by_mithandir730-d7iyqb5

Well hello there. My name is Jack DC 93. If you’ve read the Staff page on this site, you may know me for making silly PMV’s, and talking in the third person. However, I will disregard both of those today to talk to you about a really cool PMV made by daspacepony.

This PMV came in third place in the Feel Good category at this year’s BronyCon PMV Contest, and, going through the video, you can see why it earned that place. What I liked most about this PMV was how everything flowed continuously. There were no sudden cuts or jumps to throw you out of the immersion. I also liked how the motion graphics on show were timed incredibly well to the beat of the music. This is most prominent at the beginning and the end of the PMV. Finally, I appreciated the “cleanliness” of the PMV. Although it could be considered simple in terms of motion graphics, there was no clutter or flashiness when it came to this PMV, which made it stand out for me.

I feel that if daspacepony can combine the clean visuals on show here with some more complex motion graphics or effects, then they can create something truly special. But as it stands, they are definitely on the right path. It’s always great to see more talent emerge from the PMV community, and I think daspacepony will become one of the more prominent editors in time.

For now, check out the PMV for Glow below! (Or, if you like your visuals more smooth, check out the 60FPS version here!)

One Little Victory by Drummershy

request__mane_6_wallpaper_by_delta105-d50hq6e

Hello PMVToday, I am Abby, and I am one of your new overlords here on the site! If you don’t know me, I won the drama category for the PMVToday contest at BronyCon this year, and have had a couple videos featured on the site in the past, so people seem to think I know what I’m doing.

Anyway, today I bring you a video that deserves way more views than it has. It focuses more on the action side of the show, and though there does seem to be an emphasis on Twilight, each member of the mane 6 gets a moment to shine.

Drummershy’s best assets seem to be clip selection and lipsyncing. The character’s mouths are timed very well with the music – though there are a couple instances where they go off, it’s never very distracting. The clips always fit with the tone and lyrics of the song. Add in some nice masking and a couple of neat effects, and you have a really good PMV. Go check it out below, and give it some love.
