Spike’s Saga Begins by DagaYemar

friendship_is_the_force_by_johnjoseco-d3coipn

Who doesn’t love a bit of Weird Al? Well today’s PMV features one of his songs, and was edited by DagaYemar.

Now this is a very simple style PMV, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s really enjoyable, and the choice of lyrics is both fitting and comedic. If the editing was more visual heavy, I don’t think it would’ve had the same impact, it wouldn’t have given the right feel.

All good Weird Al PMV’s use this style of editing, with simple edits and clever lip sync. And although the lip sync here isn’t perfect, there was definitely a good attempt made, and the creator has a lot of potential. It’s difficult to fill out a full 5 minutes and thirty seconds of PMV with show clips, without re using too many. DagaYemar has done a good job of avoiding this, which shows they have a good knowledge of all the episodes, and where to find the right clips.

It would be great to see more videos like this from them in the future.

Shine by Epsi1

Here’s a shoutout to a less popular editor, Epsi1. This guy recently released a nice typography for the PMV Today contest, but unfortunately did not place.
He seemed to be experimenting with new effects, to gain more experience. Some of them were not so refined as they could be, but he has lots of potential.

My favorite part was the 3-D starry effect in the beginning. It seemed to flow with the song pretty well. The major flaw that I noticed with the effects were that he didn’t have any pre/post bounce when text flies in/out of stage, but he also used easing very well with the shapes and transitions.

Overall, you should definitely keep an eye out — This guy will be big soon. Go and give Epsi some love!

Kindness by DXIndustriesInc

Hi, DeLoop here. I’d just like to step in and show you all something.

I could write an entire book, or ten, about this video. It’s a gift I received for my birthday from my best friend. He’s been going through a hell of a lot over the past few months.

It broke me. It overwhelmed me and filled me with emotion, pushed me to tears and left me visibly shaken. It renders me speechless to think about our friendship, his struggles and how incredible this is. It’s the best gift I’ve ever received. It’s honestly beautiful.

I just ask that you watch it. You may not know the details and how much turbulence our relationship has been through, but I’d just like to bring it to your attention.

Thank you.

Quest (This Can’t Be All) DXIndustriesInc

spike___footprint_by_mysticalpha-d4iqali

Continuing with our influx of PMV contest videos, we have the “Best In Show”. Edited by DXIndustries, to the song “Quest (This Can’t Be All)” by BlackGryph0n and Baasik.

So what exactly is it that makes this video so good. Well the fact that it’s a Spike PMV makes it worthy of praise. Spike PMV’s are few and far between since there is little usable footage to work with. Right off the bat you get the chills, with super sharp editing of show footage to the music. The use of black and white also adds an interesting aesthetic, that stops the simple cuts from getting old.

There is a fantastic use of 3D, that makes the setting feel huge, and really makes us understand how small and insignificant Spike feels. After some more simple but effective editing, we have some slick typography. Which surprisingly enough isn’t overbearing. It’s difficult to get that good mix of typography and original footage, but DX has hit the sweet spot here by incorporating the text in to the landscape.

Honestly, I can’t find anything wrong with this PMV. It’s just a fantastic show of great talent, and there’s no surprise it won. No matter how many times I watch it, I’m always left with a huge smile on my face at the end. Props to DXIndustries, I’m sure we all hope to see more great content like this from him in the future.

I’ve Been Secretly Falling Apart by Dark Sonata

Dark ponies!  Sad ponies!  Dark Sad!  Ponies ponies!

Now here me out before you go clicking on that play button down there, some impressions of this video will make you cringe a bit, but it is so worth watching anyway.  This, I honestly believe, is the only PMV I’ve seen to make the best use of the inverted colors filter.  Other parts, such as the vectors at around 2:00, might seem way to slow and predictable, but there is an art to it all if you look past certain things.

This one has both a mood and a focus, which is about a very sad Twilight starting to degrade and fall apart.  The one scene that comes to mind?  Yes, Twi being discorded.  However there is a good bit of ingenuity in the scene selection where we don’t see the overly typical finale scenes, and I can appreciate that.  HOWEVER, the most important part of this whole entire video is that the editor had fun making it!

So for that reason, check it out with an open mind and I think you’ll find that it’s just fine.

Don’t Stop by The Collaboratory

One horse two horse pink horse blue horse orange horse yellow horse white horse purple horse.

A novel, by Dr. Hooves.

ANYWAY welcome back everybody it’s time to get the PMV train rolling again after our amazing contest at Bronycon!  Check out the contest page up top to find the results for that, and over the next few weeks we’ll be posting all the incredible submissions that we received.  Be sure to give them all lots of love for their hard efforts!

And today we have an especially fantastic collaboration between the famed editors of Ye Olde YouTube Lore.  That’s right folks, everyone from Acleps to DeLoop has joined in on this fantastic celebration of our favorite little ponies.  Sure it might lack a little focus other than the Mane crew and some general pony counterparts, but the effects are VERY SHINY, the transitions are fast and furious, and the song is well matched.  Check it out below and let the gang over at the Collaboratory know what you think!

Wish I Had an Angel by Dr_Stables

Sure, the song says “wish I had an angel”, but I bet Adagio really just wants a flat iron.

IGNORING THAT, we’ve got another effects-busting piece from the submissions here today.  It’s got a bunch of flashy lights and spinning things, so if you’re medically inclined to avoid those, please do so!

Again with Stables’ piece, the main complaint is the excessiveness of effects, although that’s turned into somewhat of their style.  Chromatic aberration plays a big part and is actually used in a different way than normal.  But my favorite part of this PMV is the new flavor of transitions that we get to see.  The effects are still a negative influence, but the thought and speed of those transitions brings it almost to an equilibrium.  So next time, we need not necessarily less effects, but calmer and more consistent ones.

Regardless, check it out below and explore the dazzling theme behind this edit!

Loyalty by Epsi1

widedash

As we lurch into another hiatus, Bronycon looms closer and us PMV judges are fighting fiercely over the contest results. Today, I’d like to take a breather and talk about a regular PMV from Epsi1. I’ve previously been acquainted with Epsi through my livestreams, so it’s nice to see him creating his own content.
So here we have an unfinished yet interesting video set to music from Phony. His upbeat style is one I’ve craved from PMV’s for a while, so it’s nice to see a video utilizing this. There’s a lot of different concepts briefly dipped into through the video, but overall it feels slightly bare. For feedback, I would suggest to have more actual editing throughout. While it’s good to let clips “breathe” with timing, the pacing of the music suggests that there could be more going on. With the suggested opening and song theme, it would’ve been nice to see a consistent focus on Dash too. That being said, the effects aren’t too bad and it feels like Epsi may currently be in the experimentation phase with AE. It’s good to see attempts being made rather than nothing at all. Some nice typography motion in the later half.

Runaway by Alanj2007 and Friends

my-little-pony-characters-hd-wallpapers-girl-photo-my-little-pony-wallpaper

It’s just like our good mayor said, this stuff really does bring people from all walks of life together.

The same applies to collaborations!

Good evening every pony and welcome to another fabulous featuring of a fantastically frivolous work of art.  The song is Runaway, but don’t do that quite yet until you’ve checked out this new collab!  This particular piece features monumental effort from big names like Alanj2007, all the way to our very own Pixel3000Nerd.

Speaking of whom, it seems like the most noticeable part about this PMV was the timing of everyone’s parts.  I’d say P3N’s style fits perfectly with the huge drop in the song when he comes in, and RDZX makes an incredible crescendo with his slightly shaken camera (and reference to G+).  DaSpacePony gives us a proper and fitting relaxation using their own ‘spaced-out’ style and JackDC93, a contest judge this year, had the perfect atmosphere for the soloed vocals at his part.

Find even more gems of editing below! And don’t forget to subscribe to each of the amazing visual engineers.

Pony Soda by DownburstProductions

Hello guys and gals! Today I bring you with a really cool PMV with a Shawn Wasabi song. If you know me, you know that I mostly like and watch PMVs with motion graphics and cool effects, but everyonce in a while I like to see some simple neat PMVs. This is one of them, and it’s great. With only using clips, no filters or effects, the editor here has arranged and synchronized each clip with the song. The silly sound effects in the music that Shawn Wasabi has created with his MIDI fighter, Downburst also added it’s own bits and clips of silly moments of the ponies which makes the video really fun to watch. Go watch the PMV down below!
