Woo, paper ponies!

Looks like we’re kickstarting another week, huh? Unfortunately, University has just started for me so I’ll likely be wrapped up with that for a bit. Education: Just say no.

Anywho, I found a pleasant surprise in my subscription box on Saturday. The return of omgilikeapples! I remember him fondly from his 2012 PMV – “Dear Princess Celestia…” The unique stop-motion paper style made that PMV stand out from a lot of others back then. It’s really nice to see a return to form utilizing that effect again in 2015 with a Porter Robinson song.

The video seems to be focused on the Season 2 finale, a recreation of the events throughout the two parter. It’s very neat to see it all brought together in this musical homage with some custom scenes to boot. For criticism, I’m left with wanting a bit more than just a recap of the episode in a different style. It’d be really cool to have more custom elements throughout! Still, what we get is great. The stop-motion style of editing is one that I’d love to see more of in PMV’s. Just imagine that done with custom art too… Oh wait, TheeLinker jumped on that train with La Da Dee…

I personally think it’d be awesome to see omgilikeapples make more stuff, so please go give them your support!

Reach by MrDeLoop

my_little_pony_wallpaper___remade_by_delta105-d4i9l6w

Welcome back my dudes. Today we have a wonderful PMV from the overlord himself, MrDeLoop.

Now this PMV is simple as simple can be. And this is because it is a remastered version of DeLoop’s first ever full PMV. Now you may be thinking, “Why re make a perfectly good PMV?”. A lot of people have asked this question, and there’s more than one answer. The original was made back in 2011. Those who have been around since then will probably remember that the episodes were horribly de-saturated. Secondly, the editor has gained so much more skill and experience over the last 4 years that it was actually a pretty good idea to make this to show how far they’ve come.

But enough about why it was made, lets get to actually talking about what makes it great. Well most notably is just how great the editing is. Perfect cuts with perfect clips. Understandable from someone with so much experience. Then there’s the lip sync, which is some of the best lipsync I’ve seen from any PMV to date. Not only that, but I find that the singers voices match go well with each character chosen. Pretty clever if you ask me.

I personally think this is the best example of classic PMV editing this fandom has ever produced. But I’ll let you guys be the judges. Check it out bellow.

Our New Intelligence by ObsessiveBookworm

onward_ponies_by_harwicks_art-d4hhcdm

Posts so nice, I did it twice!

Jack here once again, bringing you another PMV that was entered into this year’s BronyCon PMV Contest. This PMV, made by ObsessiveBookworm (who is, personally, one of my favourite PMV makers within the fandom) placed second in the Feel Good category, and right from the get-go, you can see the time and effort that was put into the video for it to achieve that spot.

What I’ve always loved about ObsessiveBookworm’s work is how all the clips on screen match the music incredibly well, and this PMV proves no exception to that rule. However, there’s a lot more to this PMV than that. The excellent use of typography (which made this PMV feel more fun and lively), as well as the motion and placement of the vectors and masks, which kick in near the middle of the video, just shows how much work ObsessiveBookworm put into this PMV, and how far they’ve come in terms of their editing skills. Add to that the occasional use of motion graphics, and you have a wonderful combination of sound and visuals.

As stated before, I am a huge fan of ObsessiveBookworm’s work, and it’s great to see them evolve so much with every new PMV they release. I can’t really wait to see what’s next.

Leave Out All The Rest by metalsystem761

Alright, I was wrong.  And I’m sorry.

When first previewing this PMV, I immediately ran into one of the more risky elements of this fandom’s editing department: fan-made mixed with official content.  Then I noticed another rather traumatic indicator: the music video resemblance “Song, Artist, Record Label” text in the bottom left corner.  Another thing that had slightly bothered me was the inclusion of “w/Lyrics” in the title.

Now there’s nothing inherently wrong with these things, but after a couple of years of searching for videos, these are typical indicators that the PMV will not be all that good.  So I assumed this and put it down for a bit.  Then I gathered up the guts to watch the whole video, and it’s pretty dang awesome.  So don’t stop watching within the first ten seconds like I did, because you’ll miss some great lyric matching, story building, character exploring and generally good editing.  Check it out!

Awake O Sleeper! by ObsessiveBookworm

applejack_in_the_west_by_alkaa_wolf-d7r5pmx

Saddle up, partner. We’re going for a ride.

Although the PMV itself doesn’t seem to be related to the typical western theme, the song certainly gives those vibes. And now I’m seriously craving more PMV’s done to that genre. We need more badass Applejack in this community – but I digress.

For the most part, the video focuses on the Mane 6 and their overarching stories which works very well with the furious intensity of the song. ObsessiveBookworm has really nailed down the timing for this one. It’s some really solid editing, powerful in nature and certainly carrying dramatic weight behind it. One of the best things about simplistic PMV’s is that by stripping away the effects, you’re left with the base visuals. This can be great for storytelling, and the atmosphere is definitely one of the positives in this one. If I had to raise an objection, it would be that I don’t quite understand if there was a sense of a direction going on here. I think a more consistent focus on individual characters or stories could’ve helped. Like OB mentions in the description, it’s a very cool song and a PMV of it had to be made. Could it be done better? Maybe. Did I enjoy it? Hell yes. It was great!

Check out some crazy intensity below.

I’ll Be Dreaming by ObbsessiveBookworm

#SunsetShimmerIsTotallyStillRelevant

And so is ObbsessiveBookworm.  After taking a short break to work on a submission for our PMV contest, we’ve got a short and meaningful piece from the wonderful editor.  And while it certainly lacks in the effects, the scene selection is surprisingly superb.

I have to extend my full thanks to this video for its scene choice.  Not only did everything fit well with the music and lyrics, but FINALLY somebody was able to use the scenes from that SS music video in a way that was not completely pretentious and/or terrible!  Looking for good PMVs on Youtube is hard, and I’ve had to trudge through hours of that same footage mixed with pop songs and Nightcore alike.  Yet somehow, this one PMV manages to make me like those same visuals all over again.

The problem I had with effects is probably only because I could imagine some sort of bloom filters or color enhancement when the song hits its upbeat part.  But it’s better underdone than overdone, and you should check it out below to see for yourself!

Because of You by rainbowdashzx and Friends

You know, happiness and sunshine and flowers doesn’t have to be the one-dimensional state of mind that we think it is.  Unless you’re Derpy over there on the right, then maybe…

ANOTHER COLLABORATION PMV shows this concept in a wonderfully exemplary way.  The song itself is rather happy with a few mixes of emotion coming in every now and then, but the editing keeps up with this perfectly and uses the happiness shown by each of our characters to flavor the entire piece.

Speaking of editing, we do get a lot of videos with fancy effects and sparkles, but it’s always worth noticing when there are edits done with quality.  I’m not saying that big effects bring down the amount of quality, but it isn’t dependent on them.  In this video, for example, we see a fabulously upbeat, speedy and lyric-matching edit in Tygr’s short part at the beginning.  Things aren’t necessarily custom, but the “dominoes” line is constructed in such a manner that I just feel super excited watching it.

Runaway by Alanj2007 and Friends

my-little-pony-characters-hd-wallpapers-girl-photo-my-little-pony-wallpaper

It’s just like our good mayor said, this stuff really does bring people from all walks of life together.

The same applies to collaborations!

Good evening every pony and welcome to another fabulous featuring of a fantastically frivolous work of art.  The song is Runaway, but don’t do that quite yet until you’ve checked out this new collab!  This particular piece features monumental effort from big names like Alanj2007, all the way to our very own Pixel3000Nerd.

Speaking of whom, it seems like the most noticeable part about this PMV was the timing of everyone’s parts.  I’d say P3N’s style fits perfectly with the huge drop in the song when he comes in, and RDZX makes an incredible crescendo with his slightly shaken camera (and reference to G+).  DaSpacePony gives us a proper and fitting relaxation using their own ‘spaced-out’ style and JackDC93, a contest judge this year, had the perfect atmosphere for the soloed vocals at his part.

Strangers by MrKupKake

button_mash_and_sweetie_belle_by_silverfox057-d75ifip

Hey guys, I’m Sambohh. I haven’t been around too long so I doubt many of you have heard of me. And come to think of it, the only PMV content I’ve ever made is a 20 second section for the Collaboratory’s latest PMV. But that doesn’t matter, what matters is the fact that I have around 3 years of video editing knowledge, so that’s a plus. Either way, I’m glad to be a part of the PMVToday team, and hope I can throw out many PMV posts for you guys to enjoy in the future. Let’s get started shall we?

Well first off we have this beautiful PMV Animation from Mr KupKake, for the song strangers by Scratch21 (feat.EileMonty). Honestly, this video was destined to be a hit from the get go. Because it features Button Mash, a popular character that we have seen little of since the JanAnimations takedown. Not only that, but the song featured is sung by none other than ShadyVox, the voice actor for Button Mash. It was just begging to be made, and KupKake stepped up to the challenge.

This video is much more than just a simple animation with show characters lip synched up to a good song. The creator made sure to use particular lighting, transitions and camera placements, to capture the feel of the song as much as possible. It speaks to the viewer on an emotional level, and really pulls at your heartstrings. Clever effects were used, such as a white vignette to clarify that the characters are reminiscing on their past. The animation links with the lyrics very well, without going off them completely. And the ending is just stunning. The way they hang their heads and cry really hits you hard.

It’s just such a well though out, well made and memorable video that I think will go very far, and become a classic that will be remembered years in the future.

Home – Madeon by MrLogic

Just how comfortable and homely can My Little Pony make you feel?

Well, as much as this next PMV can, which certainly brings up tons of nostalgic happiness from all sorts of seasons from our favorite horse show.  This particular video really brings it back for me personally thanks to that VHS style visual effect which was a very prominent detail in the Princess Bride tape that I watched at least a thousand times.

MrLogic, one of our most unrecognized editors, has brought an atmosphere that feels as comfortable as the show itself.  While there is PLENTY of overused footage from the finale scenes of each season, I truly do think that they were required to bring together the sense of nostalgia.  It makes it so much deeper for someone who’s been in the fandom for a while.  And those hugely popular scenes are actually used really well with an inspirational track, so I’d deem it fitting.

Check this thing out for yourself as you bask in the square screen of the old days.
