RE: Ask your video editing questions here!
Little awkward seeing this site's been up for months and yet there hasn't been any posts, but I'll go ahead and ask anyway. So far I've only used Vegas for my editing, but I'm trying to learn how to use After Effects as well. I've only attempted one project with it and used it unsuccessfully because I couldn't get it to render. Any idea why? I'm using CS4, btw.

First of all, did you try to add it to the render queue? If so, did you set the codec for it to output to?

To add a composition to the render queue, just click on composition in the tool bar, the click add to render queue. Then go to the tab render next to the composition's tab (which is located above the time line indicator) and choose what format to export as.

If you want to export as .mov you will need to have quicktime installed.

I'm sure people have different ways that they're used to. The one that I used pretty often is: "MainConcept AVC/AAC". It outputs a .mp4 file, which is very compressed but still looks good.

You can customize the template to increase the quality a bit: Up the average bitrate (I used 4 million) and maximum bitrate (10-14 million) and click the "two-pass" check box.

^Wouldn;t I like to know. I'm averaging at 6 different renders per video to get a working one.

I usually use avi's if I'm going to modify it in another program, or quicktimes if I'm done with it. H.264 is a good codec for compression and I think youtube agrees with it. If not, I will sometimes use an MPEG-4.

Also I have this page bookmarked for a reason.

My answer would be to just make a giant rectangular mask, feather the hell our of it, and just keyframe it to shrink however you want. Also check out the transitions tab of the effects, there's one that does that I can't recall.

What's the difference between using WAV files or MP4 files for Sony vegas? (11 in my case)
Will it just run smoother with MP4 or something?

incidentally any tips on how to get sony vegas running quicker are appreciated. Moustache

RE: Ask your video editing questions here!
Ummm, my only guess is that they will run differently because of their formatting but mainly because of their size due to that formatting. All I know is that a wav is uncompressed and a mp4 has some sort of lossless formatting... so long story short is that an mp4 has a smaller file size than a wav, which is probably easier to run. Keep in mind this is only a guess. I personally don't use Vegas anymore but I can tell you that all my video files are mp4s. Hoped this helped.
