Vegas and .mkv
Can somebody pin-point me on how exactly to get Sony Vegas 10 to work with .mkvs? I've already downloaded like a hundred codecs, yet Vegas still sees them as non-media formats.

Thanks in advance.Smile

Your best bet is to convert them.

Oh, thanks a lot Toastie. All the converters I found were horrible Trial versions.

My favorite convertor is Format Factory.

This level of reasoning is possible for TerriccotaPie!

Actually, your best bet is to extract the audio and video streams and repackage them in an MP4 container. No conversion means no quality loss and Vegas will be happy to eat it up.

I use XMedia Recode (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/XMedia-Recode). Drag and drop in MKV files, set the output format to MP4, and for the video stream check off "Video copy" under the Video>General tab so it moves the original stream. You may have to convert the audio file depending on what came in the MKV, that's generally okay because audio quality loss when encoding isn't very noticeable.

Be warned that the program crashes a lot and isn't very user friendly. Other than that it works wonders.

Another tool you can try is mkv2mp4 (http://sourceforge.net/projects/mkv2mp4/). It's much easier to use but may not work for all MKV files. Again, neither software converts video, it simply moves the original into a different container format. Read more about containers here.

Your average "I googled and found this" converters are usually pretty crappy. I reccomend downloading the K-Lite codec pack and using the program VirtualDub to convert your mkvs to lagarith avi. Vegas will love you for it.

You can of course play MKV videos using classic player with Community Codec Pack, but you can't make it readable with Sony Vegas. That's because MKV is a container file format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture, or subtitle tracks in one file and Sony Vegas doesn't accept it natively. If you want to directly open MKV in Sony Vegas Pro, you will be frustrated for Vegas not supporting MKV format. In order to import MKV Sony Vegas Pro smoothly, you'd need to encode MKV to Sony Vegas Pro supported formats first.
