Fancy by TheLightLeavesThee

Today, I bring what is probably, no joke, no exaggeration, one of the best PMVs this fandom has produced. It really is that good.

It was created by TheLightLeavesThee, who, in my experience, has two staples – using clips from the show instead of motion graphics, and emotional videos that make me want to cry. Fancy actually leaves behind the latter, and it is great to see him take on a more upbeat, fun PMV. Everything about this works. The show clips are perfectly chosen. The use of masking is top notch, especially as a way of transitioning between clips. The filters and effects are beyond amazing. The typography is great. All of the pieces fit together, making a great final product.

If I had to make a complaint, it would be the Equestria Girls clips, but it’s just a personal preference of mine to keep humans and horses in separate PMVs. But really – just go watch this thing. Right now. And while you’re at it, subscribe. I’ve been watching Dex for a while now, and every video of his gets better and better. I can’t wait to see what he has in store next.

Beautiful Now by SnowT (Collab)

What does this image have to do with today’s PMV? It’s simple: the picture is awesome, and the PMV is awesome. That’s the theme of today’s post – awesome things. Because this is an awesome PMV, featuring some awesome editors.

Seriously, every possible style of PMV is present here, and the all flow together into an excellent video. The song choice, while not one I would have thought to make a PMV of, works really well. There is a great blend of typography, motion graphics, clip selection, and even some custom animations. It’s just really good, and you should go check it out below.

Super Sonic Racing by Soniccrew128

Gotta go fast! Hey guys, Pixel3000nerd here! Today bringing you with another of the entries made for the PMV Contest 2015. This one, made by Soniccrew128 is a great one! I myself love fast paced music, and I love it when the PMV itself matches it’s rhythm too. This one does it’s job well. Ranging from some typography, to clips from various sources, show and from Ponies IRL. The transitions and animation are perfectly timed with the rhythm of the song, which by itself the lyrics is super catchy too. Actually, it’s from Sonic Generations! I’ve been dancing and bobbing my head to his :3 In short words, a great fast paced PMV. If you haven’t watched it yet, go watch it here down below. Congrats on winning 3rd place in Action category!

Darkest Part by WICKED is good

Twilight Sparkle represents friendship and all that but I bet she’d be an even better princess of the dark arts.  #JustSayin

As for today we have a rare gem from the long pages of YouTube search results that typically yield subpar videos.  This next one is somewhat heavy on effects and looks pretty dark, but at the same time it uses all of those effects rather properly and assigns those emotions in perfect accordance to the song.

Not only do we get some kick-flank distortion and typography, but the main focus of these effects is the awesome chromakeying that fills the transitions and speeds up the whole thing.  It makes the video seem like a thrill ride rather than a presentation, and it just works so well where implemented.  The complaints I had with this were the Hub logos and the fact that pastel horses still look a bit funny trying to scream.  But otherwise, my compliments to the editor and y’all should definitely give it a view or two below!

Critical Acclaim by rainbowdashzx

Equestria.  You will never find a more wretched hive of ponies and villainy…

Oh, and metal!

This next PMV by rainbowdashzx is OVER 5 MINUTES LONG and features a lot of angry horses screaming along to the sound of A7X.  The effects and theatrical style of everything make it seem like a real music video (minus the instruments) and the sound effects at the beginning do a great job of filling in empty space.  With the color correction and flashing lights, things were kept at pace with the song, which is always something hard to do.

The video is sensually beautiful.  Fantastic lip sync and nice atmosphere abounded and made all of the scenes work with the music.  The problem is, they didn’t work with themselves.  I have no clue what this video is about.  It seems to me like pure matching with the music and perhaps a general focus on evil versus good.  I invite you to check it out below and tell us what you think the focus is, but either way it’s a good visual experience if you aren’t afraid of flashing lights.

Runaway by Alanj2007 and Friends

my-little-pony-characters-hd-wallpapers-girl-photo-my-little-pony-wallpaper

It’s just like our good mayor said, this stuff really does bring people from all walks of life together.

The same applies to collaborations!

Good evening every pony and welcome to another fabulous featuring of a fantastically frivolous work of art.  The song is Runaway, but don’t do that quite yet until you’ve checked out this new collab!  This particular piece features monumental effort from big names like Alanj2007, all the way to our very own Pixel3000Nerd.

Speaking of whom, it seems like the most noticeable part about this PMV was the timing of everyone’s parts.  I’d say P3N’s style fits perfectly with the huge drop in the song when he comes in, and RDZX makes an incredible crescendo with his slightly shaken camera (and reference to G+).  DaSpacePony gives us a proper and fitting relaxation using their own ‘spaced-out’ style and JackDC93, a contest judge this year, had the perfect atmosphere for the soloed vocals at his part.

Find even more gems of editing below! And don’t forget to subscribe to each of the amazing visual engineers.

And I Think To Myself by TheLightLeavesThee

Equestria is certainly a ‘wonderful world’ until you consider the amount of explosions, mythological carnivores, and traveling salesmen it contains.  Yikes.

Luckily, we’re here on earth, with the internet, so that we can view this lovely video by an editor who was long thought to be eaten by a traveling salesman from Equestria.  TheLightLeavesThee returns in an epic and super-dramatic PMV that really puts a new perspective on our fantastic fiction of frivolous horses.

One of my favorite parts of this video is indeed how TLLT puts a spin on the classic land of ponies.  But another is how he used the epic finale scenes from the show and how he balanced those with effects and showed constraint.  It’s easy for everyone to shove in their favorite scenes from FiM along with their favorite song.  However, this video starts with smaller scenes and crescendos into the big ones, which really helps build an epic sense of progression.  This is an important thing to learn if you plan on doing pony music videos of your own one day, and this particular piece is something worth looking at carefully.

Turn your sunshiny Equestria into a world of action and creepy piano notes below!

Warriors by rainbowdashzx & Somniis Scientia

LISTEN UP PMVTODAY! Don’t believe in yourself. Believe in the inner warrior. Believe in the inner warrior who believes in you. Do the impossible. See the invisible. Touch the untouchable. Break the unbreakable. Become the person whose back will never break. Don’t be held back by someone else’s half baked dreams. The one path you choose for yourself is the truth of your universe. The dreams you leave behind will open up the door. Even if the universe will stand against you, your burning blood will sever the ties of fate! Yours is the strength that will pierce the heavens, and this is your mantra. “Just who the hell do you think we are!? We are here now don’t you dare turn away. Ours is the strength that will shatter the stars! We go beyond the impossible and kick reason to the curb! That’s how PMVToday rolls!”

NIGHT WITCHES by Pierre S. Kelijä

Why are there so many awesome Russian PMVs?  Is it because of the awesome Russian music?

Well, whatever it is, we’ve got another one for you tonight.  This thing’s effects are pretty amazing in how well they’ve been layered and applied.  There was a really nice damaged filter for the verses of the song and it got switched up while in the bridge.  There were also really nice tidbits of effects thrown in here and there, but one of the main things our editor uses is typography.  I’d have to say that this is one of the best typographical stylings I’ve seen in quite a while; the powerful appearance of the text perfectly matches the tension and excitement in the song.

My only qualms are just simple disagreements on a matter of opinion.  When I saw such a small and dimmed setup for the video, I thought that this style fit more to a creepy video than a powerful one.  However, I do recognize it for its artistic merit (the song is NIGHT WITCHES after all), and I think that some of you will enjoy it more than me.  And I still rather fancied this vid.

It’s My Life by Letupita725HD

Yes.  This is a very acceptable pun.
Yes.  This is a very acceptable pun.

Not that I’m biased towards rock n roll or anything, but I’m totally biased towards rock n roll.

And tonight, we have one of the greatest classic rock bands put to a fantastic collection of clips.  There isn’t anything I love more than a good PMV to a good song, and this one doesn’t really disappoint.  I’ll admit it isn’t the best editing I’ve ever seen, but it’s their 4th PMV so far, so I’m willing to make an exception.

The whole thing is based around Twilight, so scene selection was never going to be a problem to begin with.  Even so, the video really reruns some of the best moments of the purple pony with the horn.  “It’s My Life”, being the epic song that it is, needed some seriously epic scenes to match, and I think we’ve certainly got that.  Lip and accentuation syncing might have been a little off, and it was slightly distracting, but I’m sure that Letupita knows how to improve next time around.  (And if not, Jaref wrote an excellent article that informs everyone of the process.)

The effects were really well chosen.  They weren’t the flashiest or the most custom or the grandest, but they just worked so perfectly that it made the visuals match the audio so much better.  The constant color correction really set a nice tone, and the blurs represented distortion present in the guitars.  See for yourself!
