Hello everyone, I hope you’ve all had a wonderful Tuesday. I’ve come to show you this beautiful PMV made by Pyrobug0 called Open Your Eyes. This video won Judge’s Pick in the Everfree Northwest 2016 PMV contest, and let me tell you, this video is highly deserving of that. This is probably one of the best show footage PMVs I’ve ever seen. Heck, it might even be one of the best PMVs I’ve seen period. Seriously, the scene choices are perfect, the emotions in the video are spot on, and there are little things added throughout the video, so you may have to watch it a couple times to catch everything. All around, this video is a great work of editing, and I can’t fault it. I hope we see more from Pyrobug in the future!
I have an apology/confession to make. When I saw the results of the contest I was a tad salty about how I did. Of course, I wasn’t really expecting to win and was happy for second place, but I was not satisfied with the winner and felt robbed. It’s for this reason I will not be the one analyzing the action category since I doubt I’d be able to keep some resentment out of it. But I also made a statement on the forum that I am now regretting. Something along the lines of “Every category was judged incorrectly and every first place winner should have lost and every second place winner should have won.” This was an ugly attempt of mine to justify my bitterness and was altogether unsportsmanlike, unfair, and untrue. Of course I would have ranked many of the winners differently but making an over-generalized statement like that is incredibly rude to both the editors that worked so hard and the judges who had to rank so many videos. And in the case of the Feel Good category in particular, I find I must backpedal completely and concede that this winner is well deserving of his spot at the top.
Spark by Poki may not be as pretty as third place or as soulful as second, but it more than makes up for this by being most complete. Unlike the others, I didn’t get the impression that the editor ran out of time or rushed any part of the video. It’s a complete concept, solidly assembled, and efficiently executed. The typography is blended perfectly with the effects and the scene selection. The graphics are simple and pleasing to look at, and it all matches the music on every level worth considering. At no point whatsoever, even during the use of 3d graphics, was I disengaged from this video. That in itself is a feat worthy of applause. Everything fit together perfectly and nothing seemed out of place or overdone. And all this it did without appearing to show off. We’re here for the ponies, not the pretty effects, and this video keeps the celebration of that fact front and center by using effects to compliment the scenes used instead of simply for their own sake. After all that it’s easy to forget how naturally the video flows from one segment to the next but it does that too. This editor put a lot of work into keeping the transitions smooth and it pays off spectacularly.
If this video has a flaw, it’s one of pacing. Many of the more impressive bits are closer to the beginning or middle than towards the end. The “nothing like the rest” part with all the changelings was wonderful but I would have liked something of equal epicness closer to the finish. Also, the scene selection could have been better. That’s not to say it was bad, just good to adequate. It doesn’t really hurt the video and it’s fine as it is. A little more thought could have gone into it is all. Poki, I take my hat off to you for a well deserved win. Congratulations.
