Frame of Mind [Collab] by Alanj2007Games

Aahhh, this made me cry! For about a month, Alanj2007Games coordinated another collaboration PMV, this time to the song “Frame of Mind” by Tristam and Braken. It was originally supposed to be a collab just between him and Nebula Animations, but it was put open as a group collaboration. This allowed me to have the opportunity to work on it, along with some other great PMV creators.

I didn’t see the final product until it was released, which – I admit – allowed for an incredible surprise. The intro immediately left me in awe, giving me chills within the first few seconds. The collab itself contained so many different editing styles and content choices, as well. Two people even did some custom animation for the PMV! Some focused on specific characters like Fluttershy or Rainbow Dash; some used regular (but exciting) motion graphics / typography; and one part, by Nebula, blew me away with the feels in that it used a creative visualization of the Return of Harmony, when Twilight read her old letters to Princess Celestia. It was a blast to work on this PMV, I’m proud of what I came up with, and you definitely will love it too.

Flashlight by Pro Brony

Hey, Drakinite again. Here is another PMV that could be better visually, but is beautiful underneath. Pro Brony released this a few days ago, and I like it. The majority of the music video used text laid over clips from the show. Now, to be honest, several of the effects seemed either out of place or sloppy, but I like to emphasize that it doesn’t always matter, if there is a story or message to back it up.

This definitely did have a message behind the curtain. Pro Brony used the song — Flashlight by Jessie J — perfectly. The PMV is centered around the singer, who is helped through her tough days by someone close – whether it is a loved one or a friend, I am not sure. The video did not stick with one character; rather, show clips were chosen that best suited with the lyrics and message of the song.

Pro Brony has a lot of potential, and I’m really looking forward to what is to come from him in the future!

Far Away by Alanj2007 Games

mlp_twlight_sparkle_by_aquagalaxy-d7d9g0i

Hey guys! We’re back again with another PMV from AlanJ2007, who at this point is practically a machine with the rate he’s releasing new content. Like, damn dude. Where can I get some of that quality work ethic?

So here we have a short, flashy burst of images and music. The creator’s style is based on a mix of typography, motion graphics and show footage. It’s quite nice visually. I was impressed by his striking use of colour in some parts and the overall smoothness. However, despite the visual surface, I felt the video lacked a clear structure. Some of the scenes felt unfitting and disconnected from each other. A lot of the motion graphics seemed fancy for the sake of being fancy, rather than to exclusively serve the video. It felt somewhat shallow in content.

Criticism aside, I still think it’s amazing how the creator made this in 2 days. A lot of his visual effects still manage to inspire me, and there’s no doubting he’s improving with After Effects. Due to this only being a short project too, I feel it’s not too bad for what it is. It’d be nice to see these skills applied to future PMV’s with a clearer sense of form. Good work, nonetheless. Check out a very pretty video below!

Hey everyone! How’s it going? Truth be told, there’s been quite a drought of PMV’s recently. I’m pretty sure education is to blame. It’s that weird time of year when they’re like “Hey, you want freedom? Here’s ten billion examinations and assignments. It’s not like you needed any free time anyways.” Here’s hoping the lead-up to Summer (and more importantly; BronyCon) will get those creative juices flowing.

So as Jeff the Janitor cleans the spiderwebs from the submissions list, we here at PMVToday HQ have been searching high and low for posting material. There’s actually a lot of videos that label themselves as PMV’s. It’s just the majority are either kids making their toys dance or barely edited footage set to a high pitched version of “Timber”. We try to be fair with the spotlight, but we still have to keep some standard of quality.

That being said, I actually came across this undiscovered gem earlier today. It’s a video based on the loss of Twilight’s treehouse and the memories she made while living there. While it’s clear the creator is new to the video scene due to some minor editing errors, I was pleasantly surprised by how heartwarming this turned out. The song is a perfect fit for the show, especially the overall tone of “Castle Sweet Castle”. I’ll always have a soft spot for PMV’s that serve to compliment the morals of the episodes. The theme is about finding where you truly belong – and despite her having to move into a new physical home, the concept of home is being somewhere you feel safe and happy. Twilight’s home will always be where her friends are.

The video does a great job showcasing memories from the past 5 seasons. It’s not perfect, but the overall concept is really nice. Sometimes that alone can carry a video and bring happiness to those who watch it. Feeling the passion to bring these ideas to life is what keeps me going as an editor, and I sincerely hope to see the creativity of this editor flourish in the future.

Faster Than You Know by DXIndustriesInc

twilight___floating_in_memories_by_shiita64-d5y0z37

Hey guys! To round off the week, we have an PMV made by an awesome editor and close friend of mine, DXIndustriesInc. He actually made this last year when he hit 5000 subscribers, but I’d like to bring attention to it as it’s still a great video.

The video focuses on Twilight and her journey becoming a princess over the past few seasons. DX has a great sense of timing and pace and it clearly shows in his editing. His cuts and transitions are very clean, giving the clips a considerable impact to the beats of the song. There’s a nice flow running throughout, cutting between show footage, vectors, and the animated lyrics. The split-screen parts are also quite cool. If I had to criticize it, I’d say the repetition of solid color backgrounds can be jarring at some points. It would’ve been nice to have some kind of texture or overlay to spice them up.

The most astounding part for me is knowing that this was made in Sony Vegas. Considering the amount of kinetic typography and custom visuals, that must have been such a painstaking task to endure. The typography section at 2:08 is fantastic. I felt second-hand pain just knowing how awkward Vegas can be when handling text. It really goes to show you don’t need fancy software to make great videos. If you’re a good editor, talent shines through regardless. He deserves all those subscribers and more, and I’m so proud to call him my friend.

[PMV] Party X Party by Racecarghost

Greetings,

Fellow mondaynians,

It makes me really happy to see some nice assets. Especially when they are used well in situations I like.
For example a lot of assets have been used in this PMV to some great effect, It makes the whole experience so bouncy and happy.

This shows also some really nice transition from its original story to pony form, something you can really respect when it is done and presented with some good effort.
All the little details in the pictures and how the rpg elements are used really just puts a smile on my face. Even though I had to watch it more than once to catch them all since it goes so quick.

Thus, Fellow mondayninans, I declare this party week, Begun!

I approve this.

‪PMV – Say Something‬ by Rainbowdashzx

Greetings,

Fellow Mondaynians,

Someone asked me why I always say ‘Mondaynians’ at the start of my post, when it is very possible that people read this at other days of the week.

I won’t lie to you…

*Brief silence*

This, Mondays, PMV moves about at a gentle pace. Where the imagery is strong and speaking when it needs to be, yet absent when unnecessary. This gives some room to breathe and contemplate on the song. Its not a style which fits all PMV’s, but certainly makes it stand here.

What follows along the entire video is the use of the same effect for the text all throughout, which certainly is a fairly impressive effect to use for longterm like this, not harsh so that it breaks the visual flow.

Certainly a calming way to begin this new week, one to look forward to.

I approve This.

[Added Info]:  This song was originally sung only by Ian Axel, but later singer Christina Aguilera appeared in another version of the song, after she requested to work with the band on this song.

That’s Just what friends Do by RedDragonLRD

Greetings,
fellow Mondaynians,

Few things can really be harmonic, for to be harmony requires extremes that both work against each other and with each other. And when you think about it, such is needed in friendship too, there needs to be commonplace, together with diversity.
There is a lot of videos celebrating the Mane6, but I see its validity. Since the show has shown people an example of harmony, which they understandably want to reflect on.
This video has a pleasant feeling, and a good amount of joy in it, the editing and clip selection fitting to be an enjoyable time.

I approve this.
