Pump It by chocalicorn

party_on_wheels_by_underpable-d7of30r

Heya, new author here! I’m Ashieboop, been a fan of MLP for about 5 years now, started creating content 2 years ago. I’ve participated in a few PMV collabs in that time, as well as trying a bit of 3D animation. I also have semi-professional experience in video editing and VFX, so apparently I know things. I’ll try not to nitpick too much!

For my first post, have a great PMV by chocalicorn. It features a lot of Pinkie and Dash in their most energetic moments.

I don’t really have a lot to say about it, there’s so much done right in this PMV! This video finds a good balance between show footage, effects and typography which proves that you don’t need to focus on flashy effects to create a fun filled and energetic video. None of the effects or typography felt overused, while the show footage matched with the energy of the song.

It’s great to have the opportunity to be part of PMVToday, go check out Pump It below!

Cupcakes by Scott Rogers

sugarcube_corner_by_bluewolf487-d4j9y54

It’s rare to see someone make a video to their own song. It’s very rare for the result to be really good.

So here we have a blend of typography and motion graphics set to a remix of the classic Season 1 song. I’ll be honest – upon checking this out in the submissions I was so happy to see something utilizing typography and rocking it. In PMV’s nowadays, words are generally not the main visual focus. To see a scene set-up with the lyrics in mind is refreshing. We need more typographies in this fandom.

I love how whimsical, bright and vivid the video is. It’s a lot of fun to see creativity flowing like this, and the colourful graphics really fit with the show style. The animation is pretty smooth and the timing is spot on. Yeah, it’s a bit repetitive but that’s to be expected when making a remix of a 24 second song. I appreciate the subtle things added throughout to keep things fresh, like the variations on the song sheets. There’s a few movements which could be refined but overall Scott did a fantastic job for his first PMV. Huge props to him and I’d really love to see more content in this style.

Love Today by Arthychaud

pinkpo

Alright, here’s a challenge for you. Start playing the video and try not to smile immediately.

Did you fail? I did.

Here we have another great PMV by Arthychaud, who much to my delight is still kicking around. This is generally just an all-around happy feel good PMV. Mika’s vocal range still manages to impress me years down the line but that’s beside the point. Arthy has done a fantastic job showcasing upbeat scenes through the show and solidly syncing them up. I love the use of text and really love the solid color changes. Super simple but it just works beautifully. The ending of the PMV has to be one my favorite parts – the montage of various characters being affectionate just warms my heart. Why do these ponies have to be so GOSH DANG CUTE?!

Technically speaking, while I think the use of Pinkie’s smile song serves it’s purpose, I felt it was a tad overused. The video sets itself up as a Mane 6 homage and it would’ve been nice to see more hugs and nuzzles from the other ponies. The lack of lipsync is fine by me, but I think when you take that from a video other elements should compensate. Some parts of the video really struck gold and others could use a bit more work on the pacing and cutting to reach their full potential. Regardless, still a really fun video that I thoroughly enjoyed watching.

Spirit of Success by GuncaPMV

pinkie_pie_by_daedric_pony-d61huef

Back again guys, and today we have a great PMV from Gunca. Now we don’t normally post unfinished PMVs, but this one seems to give an excellent atmosphere regardless.

Now the first thing you notice about this PMV is just how great the lighting effects are. And the shading on the backgrounds matches it perfectly. This is what gives this PMV that great atmosphere. The creator has used animation loops with stunning visuals to great effect. You don’t need to know much about editing to see that this video is absolutely beautiful.

The scenery seems to be composed in 3D space, which becomes evident when the camera moves around the scene. I love how the color overlay changes with the type of lighting used as well. For example in the first scene, at night the color is much cooler with a blue tint. But as the sun rises, it gradually changes to orange, to match the change from night sky to sun.

I think that’s the main selling point for this PMV, just how good the lighting is, and how well the style matches up to the song. Although I’m sure we would have preferred a full length PMV, what we have here is better than nothing.

Photo Party by AgrolChannel

What’s one word to describe this next PMV?  Blissful.

That’s right ladies and colts, we have a very happy and heartwarming animation coming up from the one and only Agrol who should definitely be posting more often.  The best part about it is that there is a wonderful and relaxing story that compliments the animation style beautifully.

And what is that style you ask?  The first few seconds were in the typical fan-animation tweening process that tend to plague amateur animations.  However, we then move on to a series of pictures (not dissimilar to Fimflamfilosophy) strung together as a representation of Pinkie’s photo collection.  It’s nostalgic, funny, and it also doesn’t take itself too seriously, which seems to be a problem in more and more videos.

The story is pretty simple, but also fun.  Pinkie runs around town to invite the Mane 6 crew to her photo party and gives the invitations in creative ways.  Casually happy acoustic tunes flow right along with the actions and everything has the best possible prosody.

Find it below for a fun springtime treat!

Pony Soda by DownburstProductions

Hello guys and gals! Today I bring you with a really cool PMV with a Shawn Wasabi song. If you know me, you know that I mostly like and watch PMVs with motion graphics and cool effects, but everyonce in a while I like to see some simple neat PMVs. This is one of them, and it’s great. With only using clips, no filters or effects, the editor here has arranged and synchronized each clip with the song. The silly sound effects in the music that Shawn Wasabi has created with his MIDI fighter, Downburst also added it’s own bits and clips of silly moments of the ponies which makes the video really fun to watch. Go watch the PMV down below!

Fair Play by HeavyWeaponsBaby

pmvtoday

Are you ready for some intense feels?

So here we have a really unique video based on Pinkie’s childhood emotions. It’s not often we get PMV’s that try to tell a custom narrative in their format. Usually, the presence of the song dictates everything about the video – but here HeavyWeaponsBaby has strived to tell a tale through visuals. And with the very limited footage of Pinkie’s childhood available, that really is impressive.

The story focuses on Pinkie dealing with Granny Pie’s death. As a child, her grandmother gave her a diary. Pinkie used it to draw pictures of her hopes and dreams, of making ponies smile. However, when Granny died she felt like giving up everything she had. She’d scribble over the pages and sink deeper into depression. When Maud attempted to comfort her she would get angry and refuse. Only through remembering the happy memories could she move forward and cherish her life.

How does a show footage PMV manage to do this? Visually, it overlays a lot of colour and bloom effects onto the clips to emphasize the atmosphere. Blue is often the cold, depressive colour and so the video uses a lot of overexposed tinting. Behind the effects, there’s quite a bit of custom editing in terms of masking and vectors. It’s done very convincingly, and the overlaid effects help to pull the scenes together.

What I like most about this video is the sheer creativity used to serve the story. Rather than being intimidated by the lack of available footage (especially when it comes to the specific scenes), the creator went ahead and did their best to visualize a narrative. The work shows and I have to commend it for that. Some of the effects don’t work as well as they could, but I still feel this is a breath of fresh air. Very well put together. Check it out below.

Do Your Thing by MrDeLoop

It’s 4AM Ponyville, are you all ready to PAAARRRRTAAAAAAAAAY!?

Well you better get ready to party, because this video is nothing but 3 min 46 seconds of pure Party Horse craziness. Our own MrDeloop brings us this wonderful and crazy slice of PMV heaven. And by god is it high up. The ridiculousness of this video is off the chats, but it all flows so well to the crazy upbeat song, which like Pinkie, does it’s own thing!

I was informed that this video has been in production since 2012, and holy guacamole does it show. Like seriously, this video is the epitome of what a Pinkie Pie video should be: crazy, hyperactive, random, FUN. There’s even some references to some of Deloops previous shenanigans. From the clip selection, the transitions, text… hell, everything is just perfect to me, and I usually don’t find myself saying that on a video. It all just say’s Pinkie so well, and it’s all so polished and shiny. Just re watch and try to find all the little details that were edited in, it’s crazy! I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve played this video already…

Incredible job MrDeloop, this is easily my favorite Pinkie PMV and probably in my top 5 favorite PMVs ever made! The work you did shows.

Play Like Pinkie Pie by Shiropoint

What’s up, cool kids? I’m MrDeLoop! I’ve been making PMV’s and various pony videos in the fandom since 2011. You might know me for making the Bring it all Back PMV, Discord Kinetic Typography or even the craziness that is EQG: Day of the Flutter.  Either way, I’m super excited to be joining the PMV Today author team from here on out. I’ve always felt passionate about PMV’s and it’ll be pretty damn cool to ramble about them over here. They are my friends, after all.

So, let’s kick this party off with perhaps one of my biggest editing inspirations in the fandom – Shiropoint. His Mane 6 series of videos made back in 2011 do an incredible job of capturing the personality, style and energy of each pony. Play Like Pinkie Pie is one of the gems that stuck out for me back when I first joined. The sense of pace, mix of show footage and custom visuals, the perfectly fitting song… It all flows together to create an awesome video that completely captures the essence of Pinkie. It’s a high octane burst of pure sugar filled craziness. And I love it.

With hundreds of thousands of views on these musical homages, Shiro’s earned his place as one of the more notable classic MLP editors. I’m sure he’s inspired many of us to go forth and just be creative because it’s FUN. Even if he’s recently taken an interest in other creative endeavors, I’ll always look up to his video-making talent and rewatch these videos to fuel my own motivation.

Oh, and in case you haven’t seen it – check out [this remake] made by NoPonyZone. It’s a really cool modern take on an old classic.

Celestia Loves You by Terriccota Pie

So let me be honest- I have no idea what is going on in this video or what Terricotta Pie had going through his head when he made it. I do however know that it is wonderfully silly.

I really don’t even know what to else write about this other than Celestia loves you, Twilight has a very Russian accent, and Pinkie is silly.

Just watch it.
