Frame of Mind [Collab] by Alanj2007Games

Aahhh, this made me cry! For about a month, Alanj2007Games coordinated another collaboration PMV, this time to the song “Frame of Mind” by Tristam and Braken. It was originally supposed to be a collab just between him and Nebula Animations, but it was put open as a group collaboration. This allowed me to have the opportunity to work on it, along with some other great PMV creators.

I didn’t see the final product until it was released, which – I admit – allowed for an incredible surprise. The intro immediately left me in awe, giving me chills within the first few seconds. The collab itself contained so many different editing styles and content choices, as well. Two people even did some custom animation for the PMV! Some focused on specific characters like Fluttershy or Rainbow Dash; some used regular (but exciting) motion graphics / typography; and one part, by Nebula, blew me away with the feels in that it used a creative visualization of the Return of Harmony, when Twilight read her old letters to Princess Celestia. It was a blast to work on this PMV, I’m proud of what I came up with, and you definitely will love it too.

Motions (PMV Animation Teaser) by Drakinite

386815

Ah Monday, we meet again. Overall, it’s been quite a good week for us. Our new writers have done a great job and it’s awesome to see the site in action again. So with that in mind, I’d like to grab the spotlight and shine it in our direction. Specifically at the blue dragon sitting over there.

A lot of us who write for PMV Today are content creators ourselves and I feel this allows for a variety of different opinions and viewpoints. Case in point: Drakinite. He’s a talented up-and-coming animator who’s working on a full length custom animated PMV. Self promotion aside, he released a teaser for the project a few weeks ago and it’s pretty cool.

With the overwhelming success of “Strangers“, there’s no doubting that animated PMV’s can be executed very well. “Motions” here seems to feature a new OC character singing about her woes. What woes exactly? I’m… not sure. But hey, Soarin’ shows up for a few seconds. I’m gonna take a shot in the dark and say Miss Pink over here wants to be in a relationship with Soarin, but his heart lies with Spitfire. I think. Maybe. Possibly.

Alright – truth be told I’m not entirely sure what’s going on. It’s hard to tell from one teaser. All I know is that the animation shown is promising. Solid lip-sync and it’ll certainly be interesting to see what story emerges with these new characters. I do hope that we get enough context to be able to sympathize and relate with them. Often it’s difficult to create that connection with the audience, especially in a short music video. Either way, I wish him the best of luck with the creation. Hope it turns out well.

Check out the teaser below, and be sure to subscribe and pester Drakinite for the eventual release!

I’ve Been Secretly Falling Apart by Dark Sonata

Dark ponies!  Sad ponies!  Dark Sad!  Ponies ponies!

Now here me out before you go clicking on that play button down there, some impressions of this video will make you cringe a bit, but it is so worth watching anyway.  This, I honestly believe, is the only PMV I’ve seen to make the best use of the inverted colors filter.  Other parts, such as the vectors at around 2:00, might seem way to slow and predictable, but there is an art to it all if you look past certain things.

This one has both a mood and a focus, which is about a very sad Twilight starting to degrade and fall apart.  The one scene that comes to mind?  Yes, Twi being discorded.  However there is a good bit of ingenuity in the scene selection where we don’t see the overly typical finale scenes, and I can appreciate that.  HOWEVER, the most important part of this whole entire video is that the editor had fun making it!

So for that reason, check it out with an open mind and I think you’ll find that it’s just fine.

Always by rainbowdashzx

Aww, relationships with pastel horses can be very hard apparently.

And that’s something shown in our next PMV by our long time editor, rdzx.  Speaking of whom, you should tune in this Friday at 10pm EST right here: http://www.twitch.tv/pmvtoday for an interview with the talented fellow, hosted by yours truly.  It will be fun and you’ll get to ask questions!

Moving on to the PMV however, the editor really took a new step by trying out a very soft and utterly beautiful style.  There’s all sorts of what appears to be bloom and vignettes that really compliment the sadder and outreaching theme of the music.  Speaking of which, the general theme in this PMV seems to be about longing and keeping memories of friends, mostly centered around a few of the Mane 6 + Spike.

Everything comes together nicely, and the typography is actual rather fitting.  It adds nicely without really detracting or cluttering things up.  I like this PMV, and so will you after you check it out below!

Lullaby for a Princess by WarpOut

Untitled

Honestly, this is perhaps the best animation this fandom has ever produced.

Two years in the making, this animation focuses on the story of the two princesses. We see the tale of Luna’s banishment from Celestia’s perspective, and it is undeniably beautiful. Words are almost not enough to praise the sheer artistry of this creation. The style is gorgeous, the animation is outstanding, there’s a perfect use of ambient lighting and the emotional depth is staggering. The overall production value rivals that of large-scale animation companies. Considering the majority of this was created by one unpaid individual as a labor of love, the results are absolutely mind-blowing.

Even from an editor’s perspective, I can respect the amount of hard work, dedication and effort that this project must have took. While it may currently be spreading around like wildfire, I believe WarpOut deserves every single ounce of praise he gets. If he doesn’t get any career opportunities or the chance to advance his profession due to this, the world would be suffering a great injustice. Truly awesome.

Fair Play by HeavyWeaponsBaby

pmvtoday

Are you ready for some intense feels?

So here we have a really unique video based on Pinkie’s childhood emotions. It’s not often we get PMV’s that try to tell a custom narrative in their format. Usually, the presence of the song dictates everything about the video – but here HeavyWeaponsBaby has strived to tell a tale through visuals. And with the very limited footage of Pinkie’s childhood available, that really is impressive.

The story focuses on Pinkie dealing with Granny Pie’s death. As a child, her grandmother gave her a diary. Pinkie used it to draw pictures of her hopes and dreams, of making ponies smile. However, when Granny died she felt like giving up everything she had. She’d scribble over the pages and sink deeper into depression. When Maud attempted to comfort her she would get angry and refuse. Only through remembering the happy memories could she move forward and cherish her life.

How does a show footage PMV manage to do this? Visually, it overlays a lot of colour and bloom effects onto the clips to emphasize the atmosphere. Blue is often the cold, depressive colour and so the video uses a lot of overexposed tinting. Behind the effects, there’s quite a bit of custom editing in terms of masking and vectors. It’s done very convincingly, and the overlaid effects help to pull the scenes together.

What I like most about this video is the sheer creativity used to serve the story. Rather than being intimidated by the lack of available footage (especially when it comes to the specific scenes), the creator went ahead and did their best to visualize a narrative. The work shows and I have to commend it for that. Some of the effects don’t work as well as they could, but I still feel this is a breath of fresh air. Very well put together. Check it out below.

College Filly by Arthychaud

:(

Today’s PMV is brought to you by the theme of bullying.  And indeed, it’s a very touchy subject: Arthychaud said that this is one of his most personal videos and I’m sure the theme relates back to many of us.  For some background, the format and style of the piece is based off of the original music video for the song, which isn’t uncommon in the editing world.

Luckily for us, this video doesn’t end like the original (explicit) and instead shows the positive effects of adult intervention (bonus points to Arty!).  Not much can be said about the effects aside from how the visuals are extremely formatted in a neat and clean way.  This really helps to create an environment, especially during surreal parts with fractal noise.

The reason some people make PMVs is to say something that can’t be said with just words or a song or a video alone.  In that way, I can’t tell you what this video is saying, so go check it out below!

Final Masquerade by Dr_Stables

RDScootsimage

Hey there, Sunday PMV folk! Isn’t the image above just insanely adorable? I’ve always loved RD being a surrogate sister to Scootaloo and when she took her under her wing I think I might’ve actually contracted diabetes. Seriously.

Anyway, today we’re bringing you a Scootadash PMV based on a Linkin Park song. The video takes the song and connects it to MLP by focusing on Scootaloo’s lamentation – presumably over the relationship she shares with Dash. Although there are some parts that show potential, there are a lot of unnecessary effects used throughout. Perhaps the most prevalent is the motion blurred screenwipe from shot to shot and the flashes. Oh god, the flashes.

I’ll give props to the creator for tackling a Scootaloo/Dash type of PMV – there’s not many scenes of them together interacting so this makes scene selection tough. There’s ways to cheat this such as using splitscreen, intercutting or masks, but the way they went about it felt slightly artificial and forced. Some of the effects feel slightly detached, as if they were included to make the video stand out rather than utilizing them within the context of the theme. It’s not necessarily bad to use effects in PMV’s. In fact, in some they can really bring the footage to life. But as you improve at editing and get past the experimental stage of learning a program, you should try to be creative with how you make use of them. A stellar example of this would be Linker’s [Faint PMV] which is definitely flashy, but does so in a way that compliments the atmosphere.

Although it wasn’t quite my taste, I do hope you guys get a kick out of it. Check it out below!

Lost Friendship by Alanj2007 Games

Now how could you not forgive a Draconequus as cute as that?

While this PMV is focused around lost friendships, true to its title, we get to see a lot of Discord’s best before we hit season 5.  My favorite thing about this video is that there is an incredible feeling of intimate sadness even with the overused finale scenes from S4.  Now I know that might turn off some of you before you even click on the play button, but you’d be surprised at how quickly your opinion can change.

Another incredibly interesting point about this video is the use of its effects.  Alanj2007 has certainly gotten the hang of editing and has come a long way since his first PMV not so long ago.  You’ll notice some glitchy and otherwise hardcore distortion effect in this video, and that may seem out of place to the average eye.  But just like the action scenes this PMV uses, those effects serve more of a peaceful and memorable impression rather than one of excitement.  It’s a great technique that is used appropriately in hardly any videos.

Grab a box of tissues if your tear ducts are sensitive and check it out below!

The Grey by metalsystem761

1

Hey everyone! Hope you’re all having a good weekend so far. I’ve been attempting to do some film editing for class, but the lack of candy coloured equines has distracted me. Go figure.

Anyway, today we’re bringing you a emotional PMV focusing on inner turmoil and redemption. This PMV seems to use a variety of characters such as Luna, Applejack and Discord to highlight the dramatic impact of the song. I have to give praise for the scene selection used here, their choices really do compliment the lyrics. Speaking of lyrics, The use of text on screen is decent – it’s an extra element that further exaggerates the emotion. The transition effects seemed forced at some points, but for the most part it works. If the creator develops and improves it in future videos, it could become quite an interesting style for them.

I do quite like how the video lets the clips breathe a bit in terms of pacing. When editing to music it’s important to know how long to hold a clip. Do you cut to the rhythm or to the emotion? Here, the emotion takes priority and so we get a chance to sympathize with the characters. Overall, this is a nice solid PMV that strives and achieves the atmosphere of the song. Check it out below.
