Rarity: “Et tu, Sweetie Belle?”

Translation: “U2, Sweetie Belle?”

Okay, okay, that joke was in bad taste, but Mario and Luigi got a laugh out of it, I bet. Because they’re Italian, and… nevermind.

Let’s start again, shall we? Today’s PMV is an enjoyable and simple one, set to a great Et Tu—er, U2 song. The flapping pony mouths during certain instrumental parts was a bit distracting, but overall, the editing is pretty smooth, and the scene choices carry a good vibe throughout, and follow the lyrics with supreme literalness at times. Really, this is a solid and feel-good montage of some of the best parts of the show, set to a great classic song.

Tweeny Ponies by The Ferbguy

Salutations everybody! Dae314 here to spread chaos and happiness throughout your blessedly long weekend. Of course the best way to do that is with a wonderful little PMV! If Miyazaki were writing the opening sequence for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, this would be it folks. Maybe a few more zoom over the shoulder, out of an eye, or camera following a running pony scenes would be added, but in general this would probably be it. The Ferbguy has made a video that is at once a snapshot and an overview. Nothing is revealed in the video, but nothing is meant to be revealed by the video. There’s action, friendship, tension, Discord, and pretty much every other defining aspect of MLP:FiM rolled up into one little one and a half minute video. He does not have a muffin discord though. Nope. That belongs to PMVToday. But he has everything else!

Twilight’s Not Gonna Die by GaarasIchibi88

So, now that we’re properly removed from that awesome Season 4 finale, and we’ve all had some time to decompress, let’s ponder a bit on where we go from here. One thing I noticed from this season is how much the quality of animation has improved since the show began. The artists and animators are free to do all these new and exciting things, and they inspire us as PMV makers to tap into our creative centers as well. And that has never been more apparent than in the awesome finale episodes, especially that amazing fight scene between OP Twilight and Lord Monster Man-Horse. And what do all amazing fight scenes need? Why, a total badass early 2000s hard alt-rock soundtrack, of course! So check this out: it’s a blood-pumping, heart-pounding, soul-igniting journey through the final battle of Twilight Sparkle, and the rise of the Princess of Friendship. Enjoy!

Some Nights by PonyPals4Ever

tirek_by_seyllah-d7hvcgp

Prepare for the massive hailstorm of PMVs overusing footage from the Season 4 finale! It’s inevitable. But I can’t say that I mind, because that footage is seriously high caliber, folks. It’s pretty much impossible to make something bad out of it (sorry, that wasn’t a challenge, so don’t get any ideas).

Today’s PMV wrings a lot of usage out of the finale footage, but that does give it some consistency at least. It’s an enjoyable watch with an enjoyable song behind it. The lip-syncing is a bit sloppy (a pet peeve of mine), and I would have liked to see some tighter editing for the more upbeat action sequences (i.e. scene cuts being made with the rhythm on the more powerful downbeats). Essentially what we have here is a field trip through some of the finale’s best moments, with a fun soundtrack behind it, and that’s not a bad thing.

Who Says You Can’t Go Home by Paul Miller IV

Hello everybody! Dae314 here and you’ll never guess whose video I brought to show today. Seriously you’ll never guess. I mean his name is only in large text up above this post and he’s only made one PMV every three days since the beginning of time. That’s right it’s time for YANVFPM (yet another new video from Paul Miller IV).

You have to give Paul credit. Even though he now has over a hundred videos, he’s managed to keep a good level of quality and editing consistency across all of them. His biggest weakness is still the lack of originality in his videos, but good work is good work regardless of how original it is. Like most of Paul’s videos, this one shows off his impeccable sense of scene selection and mastery of the simple cut transition. Although I personally disagree with his use of a couple sad scenes in a song that is clearly meant to have a positive message, those scenes make up maybe three percent of the overall video. Much of the video is random celebration matching the music, and while that’s fine, I think Paul may have missed something good here. Twilight Sparkle was originally from Canterlot although she has been living in Ponyville for a while now. This song could have been edited into a story about how Twilight finds her new home in Ponyville among her friends. Paul’s cinematic editing style could have probably pushed this story quite well to viewers. But Paul didn’t edit the video that way, and the video we got is still quite fun to watch so please sit back and enjoy yet another one of Paul’s many creations.

Clocks by Unr3al Gamer

I agree with the author of this video that it’s odd that nobody else has PMVified this song before. It seems like a no-brainer, really. But then, who needs another version of it now that we have this one? This song has a great feel, and really fits the PMV mold nicely. The editing on this one is simple and clean, with great timing and appropriate scene choices that are sometimes so literal to the lyrics as to be obtuse (but I’ve done the same hyper literal thing with my own videos, so I’m not complaining!) It has more of a montage feel than a story-driven feel, and that’s okay by me. Not every PMV needs to have a particular story to it (also, I could just be blind and not seeing the story in this one)

I love me a good simple PMV, and the tasteful absence of flashy effects looks great here. Some of the footage during the longer instrumental portion near the end felt a bit like filler to me, but at least the action in the footage was engaging, and fit the flow of the song well. Tight editing can make up for any drag in content, and that’s certainly the case here. All in all, this is a really nice one, and does great honor to such a stellar Coldplay song.

Piano Mare by Paul Miller IV

You know, at this point we might as well rechristen this site “PMIV Today”, because every time we turn around, another video has been released by this talented PMV producer. The subject of our most recent spotlight has struck gold once again, this time lending his high-and-tight editing expertise to one of the most iconic musical performances in rock history. Everything you already know about the reddest card on the field is on prominent display in this video, perhaps even done a little bit better. And that’s the true calling card of a fame-worthy editor: the ability to improve with every video. To all the up-and-comers out there, I offer this advice: Watch this video, take good notes, and practice practice practice.

Keep your ears open, by the way, for our Editor Spotlight interview with the man himself, which was conducted earlier today, and will be available at some point in the very near future.

Castle of Shadows by IdhrenLives

Castle

One thing I love about PMVs which pull their music from fanmade songs is that they tend to sync up better to the actual video than lyrics that would otherwise just be interpreted. And that is no more well projected than here, in “Castle of Shadows,” which is a PMV of a song of the same name by SlyphStorm. The lyrics tie in better with the clips, and it makes your job as an editor a ton easier. And the easier it is, the more motivation you have to push forward with your project.

I cannot stress enough how perfectly the lyrics and clips tie together. That isn’t a coincidence, of course. But it really helps to sell what a “PMV” really is. a Pony Music Video. I also really like how much of a retro, Castlevania-esque vibe the track gives off. Pure nostalgia. Check it out below! It’s a fun one!

My Life is a Party by rspectcopyrightmyass

With Alicorn Pinkie, neither sky nor ground is safe.

And we finally get another PMV from this excellent simple editor.  Normally when I think about a super pumped party project, I’m thinking distortion effects, blur transitions, all the like.  But naw.  We clearly see here that there are enough party scenes that the animators of the show have rocked out on that we don’t need any fancy pants effects.  Not to mention the excellent use of outside resources like the Equestria Girls stuff for Rainbow Rocks or whatever the big deal is about these days.

Is there anything bad about it?  Sure.  We could’ve used some color correcting in a few spots.  MAYBE a few of the scenes are too hardcore for the song.  But did you even see the lip sync?!? That stuff was crazy good for also having to match up some super psyched scenes to go along with it.  It’s hard to get the lips movin’ and the attitude of the scenes matchin’ all at the same time you know?

Anyway, y’all gotta party hard for a second here.  Check out this video from one of my new favorite editors.

(HINT HINT:  THE PARTY STARTS AT 2:40)
