Rainbow Dash’s Rousing Song of Heroism by DagaYemar

power_ponies___zapp_by_sakurawolfer-d6zq3ot

Hello readers of PMVToday, NameGoes here with another PMV from DagaYamar.

As with the other PMV of his we showcased here, it’s a simple PMV to suit the relatively simple music. The simple editing style also fits the song as it heralds back to the classic PMV’s with the song, and you don’t need overly complicated visuals to accompany a song like this. It features Rainbow Dash and Spike mostly, but uses other characters where they fit in the song.

With a song like this, it makes you get scenes from many different things, as it talks about different powers and such, so they did a really good job in finding appropriate scenes for each lyric, which once again shows knowledge about the show. The lip sync is also well done, a necessity in a PMV like this, and I definitely appreciate the work that had to be put into it. The mood was also very, jolly you could say, throughout, and he did a good job of keeping that mood and using it well.

All in all, here we have a classic PMV that reminds us of those good old times of simple editing and simple visuals, and simple is nice. Go check it out below!

Spike’s Saga Begins by DagaYemar

friendship_is_the_force_by_johnjoseco-d3coipn

Who doesn’t love a bit of Weird Al? Well today’s PMV features one of his songs, and was edited by DagaYemar.

Now this is a very simple style PMV, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s really enjoyable, and the choice of lyrics is both fitting and comedic. If the editing was more visual heavy, I don’t think it would’ve had the same impact, it wouldn’t have given the right feel.

All good Weird Al PMV’s use this style of editing, with simple edits and clever lip sync. And although the lip sync here isn’t perfect, there was definitely a good attempt made, and the creator has a lot of potential. It’s difficult to fill out a full 5 minutes and thirty seconds of PMV with show clips, without re using too many. DagaYemar has done a good job of avoiding this, which shows they have a good knowledge of all the episodes, and where to find the right clips.

It would be great to see more videos like this from them in the future.

Quest (This Can’t Be All) DXIndustriesInc

spike___footprint_by_mysticalpha-d4iqali

Continuing with our influx of PMV contest videos, we have the “Best In Show”. Edited by DXIndustries, to the song “Quest (This Can’t Be All)” by BlackGryph0n and Baasik.

So what exactly is it that makes this video so good. Well the fact that it’s a Spike PMV makes it worthy of praise. Spike PMV’s are few and far between since there is little usable footage to work with. Right off the bat you get the chills, with super sharp editing of show footage to the music. The use of black and white also adds an interesting aesthetic, that stops the simple cuts from getting old.

There is a fantastic use of 3D, that makes the setting feel huge, and really makes us understand how small and insignificant Spike feels. After some more simple but effective editing, we have some slick typography. Which surprisingly enough isn’t overbearing. It’s difficult to get that good mix of typography and original footage, but DX has hit the sweet spot here by incorporating the text in to the landscape.

Honestly, I can’t find anything wrong with this PMV. It’s just a fantastic show of great talent, and there’s no surprise it won. No matter how many times I watch it, I’m always left with a huge smile on my face at the end. Props to DXIndustries, I’m sure we all hope to see more great content like this from him in the future.

More Than A Feeling by willygilligan815

All this Spike love recently has got me feeling like he might be a legitimate character actually worth developing and being interested in.

Nah.

But today we do bring you a “Rarity” if you will, in the world of PMVs.  There is almost never a time where somebody’s first PMV is legitimately good, and even now I doubt that this was the editor’s absolute first.  But going off of what the YouTube description says, this video is indeed a first timer and it is certainly fair.

The best part is its simple style and storytelling, which we are beginning to see a lot more often in the scene.  The effects are used when necessary, such as a color filter to represent a flashback or dream.  But they aren’t too much in the way, which is always good.  The story itself rolls along with the song and is essentially a love story for the purple couple above.  But I’ll let you figure out the whole thing below!

Always by rainbowdashzx

Aww, relationships with pastel horses can be very hard apparently.

And that’s something shown in our next PMV by our long time editor, rdzx.  Speaking of whom, you should tune in this Friday at 10pm EST right here: http://www.twitch.tv/pmvtoday for an interview with the talented fellow, hosted by yours truly.  It will be fun and you’ll get to ask questions!

Moving on to the PMV however, the editor really took a new step by trying out a very soft and utterly beautiful style.  There’s all sorts of what appears to be bloom and vignettes that really compliment the sadder and outreaching theme of the music.  Speaking of which, the general theme in this PMV seems to be about longing and keeping memories of friends, mostly centered around a few of the Mane 6 + Spike.

Everything comes together nicely, and the typography is actual rather fitting.  It adds nicely without really detracting or cluttering things up.  I like this PMV, and so will you after you check it out below!

Come On by Stellafera

Ya know, I’ve always really disliked Spike as a character.

UNTIL NOW

So drop what you’re doing and listen up, because this new one by Stellafera will change everything you thought you knew (maybe) about the purple pair .  First answer: No, it is not a shipping PMV.  It’s really just a fantastic journey through the relationship of two wonderfully interwoven characters.  Heck, one might say it’s pretty “d’awwwn cute!” *Badum Tss*

The video not only recounts the times the two adventured throughout Equestria together, but it shows their failures in the show and how they pick themselves up.  All of the editor’s scenes really tie in literally with the lyrics and show just how much Panic!’s words relate to what’s going on.  It’s a story about everlasting friendship, shared failures and victories, and at the end there’s a beginning.  And of course, Stella tells it best below!

Spike Can’t Say Goodbye by DagaYemar

Spike_leaving_home_S1E24

Poor Spike. Little guy can’t even catch a break.

Today we’ve got a fun little video based on Spike’s desperation to be with Rarity despite her turning him down. As the song implies, he just can’t say goodbye to her and keeps coming up with excuses.

I actually saw [another PMV] to this song based on the Mane 6 a while ago. While I preferred the editing and variation in that one, I do like how this one focuses primarily on Spike’s feelings. A highlight for me had to be the fun scene selection showing potential tragedies for Rarity. Perhaps the video would’ve benefited from putting in more effort with the lipsync. As it stands, it’s partially synced which is a hit or miss situation throughout the video.

It was amusing to see the reactions of the other ponies. Daga really nailed down the characterization in the video. Spike rocking back and forth with a pillow especially. Looks like you’ve been completely and utterly friendzoned, buddy.

Heroes by rainbowdashzx

Spike is a hero.  Kinda.  By circumstance.  In a way.

I’ll chill with the Spike hate because it’s time to appreciate rainbowdashzx’s new PMV which is just great. This one is brought to you by commission of another friend of the pony music video community: theinvincible316.  I didn’t even know PMV commissions were a thing, but if they all turn out this good, I think I’d be willing to invest.

Really, the PMV is about Spike x Rarity and the deep personal struggle that the purple/green dragon has with his heroic complex, causing him to constantly feel down and striving for the opportunity to be the savior he wants to be.  BUT ENOUGH OF THE BORING ANALYTICAL TALK, did you see that scene layout?!  Now that was a great modern-style design choice by our editor with fitting typography and some light-based transitions to boot.  I do feel at times like I’m stuck in a cave with all of these vignettes, but my favorite part of the vid is how it uses blank space.  You don’t have to have stuff on the screen 24/7, kids.

So go catch it below for a show about a hero and his fair mare with the dazzling hair.

This Is Not The End (Twilight & Spike) by Jiutti-Senpai

If you haven’t gotten your dose of feels, this right here will probably give it to you. This is a pretty tough video (and subject) to write about, so bear with me.

The bonds of Twilight and Spike are well established through canon. They are practically like mother and son, and yet also best friends. The idea of one outlasting the other has certainly been explored before, but usually from the perspective of the comparatively short lifespan of ponies vs. dragons. This might have been allayed by the assumed lifespan immortality of Twilight upon becoming a princess, but what if just lifespan wasn’t the issue. What if life was the issue. If one knew the other was soon to depart ahead of schedule. How would they handle it. Is knowing the end is near really the end, or just the beginning?

Both depressing and yet uplifting, this video is worth the emotional roller coaster. The editing style does a good job of complimenting the very somber yet positive outlook of the song. Personally I would have liked to have seen a cohesive story,  there was some legibility issues with the text color, and the pixel motion effect used near the end bugged me, but overall it’s still a well edited video that is worth a watch!

It’s Been So Long by TackiestFire

stained_glass__king_sombra_by_akili_amethyst-d5trw20

Happiest of Fridays to you! It has been a while since I (TheDanielsaur) have posted anything, and for that I apologize. Life happens, you know? But for now, it looks like I am migrating from Wednesdayland and taking up residence in Fridayville for the foreseeable future. It’s nice here.

Anyhoo, today’s PMV comes to us from a most un-chic flame by the name of TackiestFire. There’s something oddly compelling about this PMV that I can’t quite put my hoof on. It’s a bit emo, overall, but the driving beat combined with some excellent footage choices make for an entertaining watch, even if me isn’t usually my forte. I like the sense of narrative that this one has, even if there might be just one too many clips of Twilight on the verge of tears for my liking. I get what the author was doing, however, and I appreciate it. The flip-flops between grayscale and color felt a bit arbitrary, but when all is said and done, I quite enjoyed this PMV for its solid editing, engaging story and (as previously stated) overall compelling nature.
